APC Blasts Tambuwal Over Allegations Against Tinubu, Opposition Politics

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a fierce attack on former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, over his recent remarks against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the party. The APC accused Tambuwal of making “foul allegations” without evidence and of fueling needless hostility in the political space.
Tambuwal, in a recent televised interview, alleged that President Tinubu and the APC were plotting to destabilize opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections. He also claimed that opposition leaders were confident of defeating the president and his party in the next general elections.
But in a statement issued late Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Barrister Felix Morka, the APC said Tambuwal’s remarks were nothing more than “baseless accusations” aimed at distracting Nigerians from the failures of the opposition.

“Bogus Claims Without Proof”
Morka said Tambuwal, like many of his opposition colleagues, offered no substantiation for his claims. Instead, he accused him of joining what he described as a “bandwagon of disgruntled opposition figures whose pastime is blind attacks on the president.”
“Despite their inert and lackluster engagement, it is now clear to Nigerians that the present crop of opposition leaders have lost focus, assuming they ever had any,” Morka said. “Their obsession is not with building Nigeria but with power and patronage that serve their ego and greed.”
According to the APC, opposition politics should not be reduced to smear campaigns or unfounded allegations. Morka stressed that genuine opposition must hold government accountable within the framework of law and democratic norms, while also providing credible policy alternatives.
“Opposition politics is not simply about membership of a different party. It is not about hopping from one platform to another based on selfish calculations. It is not about weaponizing grudges disguised as critiques. It is about offering viable alternatives and promoting accountability,” the statement noted.
Opposition Leaders Accused of Failure
The APC further accused Tambuwal and other opposition figures—naming Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Mr. Peter Obi, and Mr. Rotimi Amaechi—of failing in their duties as leaders.
Morka argued that despite holding some of the highest political offices in Nigeria’s history, the group had failed to provide leadership or purpose for their parties. He said instead of organizing and strengthening their platforms, they had chosen the “easy route” of blaming the APC for their failures.
“How can anyone take present-day opposition leaders seriously as capable of leading Nigeria at this high-stakes moment when they have proved grossly incapable of leading their parties?” Morka asked.
EFCC Allegations Against Tambuwal
The APC statement also touched on Tambuwal’s ongoing battle with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The ex-governor is reportedly under investigation for alleged cash withdrawals amounting to N189 billion in contravention of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act of 2022.
According to Morka, Tambuwal’s claim that the investigation is politically motivated reveals a “perverse sense of entitlement” common among opposition leaders.
“Tambuwal must believe that his status as an opposition politician confers immunity from investigation. No citizen, including members of the opposition, is above the law,” Morka stressed.
The party accused Tambuwal of using emotional blackmail and claims of victimization to avoid accountability.
APC Dismisses Opposition Coalition Efforts
The APC also downplayed ongoing efforts by opposition parties to form a coalition ahead of 2027. According to Morka, such efforts were collapsing due to selfishness and internal contradictions among the leaders.
He cited the recent “hostile takeover” of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as an example of the instability within opposition ranks, warning that Nigerians should not expect unity or progress from them.
“With nothing of value to offer, opposition leaders have turned into political prophets, predicting outcomes for 2027. But Nigerians have rejected them before, rejected them in recent bye-elections, and will reject them again,” the APC said.
Focus on Governance
The ruling party insisted that President Tinubu and his administration were too focused on governance to meddle in the affairs of opposition parties. It dismissed Tambuwal’s allegations as distractions and reaffirmed Tinubu’s commitment to Nigeria’s economic recovery.
“As a party, we will continue to strengthen our internal democratic systems and serve Nigerians better. As a government, President Tinubu remains resolute in rebuilding generationally neglected foundations of our economic life and repositioning the country for sustainable progress,” the statement concluded.
The exchange between Tambuwal and the APC underscores rising political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts say the fierce rebuttal shows the ruling party is unwilling to allow opposition figures to shape the narrative unchallenged.
Tambuwal, who remains influential within opposition circles, may see this as an opportunity to rally support ahead of a possible presidential bid. On the other hand, the APC’s attack signals its determination to frame the opposition as weak, divided, and lacking credibility.
As both camps trade words, Nigerians remain focused on whether the government will deliver on its economic promises and whether the opposition can provide a credible alternative.
