Three police officers were shot dead by gunmen at a checkpoint in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, in the early hours of Wednesday.
The attack, which occurred in the border town between Kogi and Kwara states, sparked tension in the community.
Spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Ovye Aya, confirmed the incident in a statement, disclosing that the gunmen carted away the rifles of the slain officers.
“I can confirm that three officers on duty were killed today in Egbe, a border community with Kwara State. The Commissioner of Police has deployed a tactical squad, and we are on the trail of the perpetrators,” Aya said.

He added that the deployed tactical team had been directed to restore calm in the area and ensure the attackers are apprehended.
Community sources said the gunmen struck suddenly and overpowered the officers before fleeing with their weapons.
The development comes barely two days after a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer, DSP Adama Adekunle Emmanuel, was allegedly shot dead by a colleague under unclear circumstances in Life Camp, Abuja.
