The Kaduna State Police Command has officially invited the former governor of the state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and seven other leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for questioning in connection with allegations of criminal conspiracy, incitement of public disturbance, mischief, and causing grievous hurt.

According to reports, the invitation was contained in a letter dated September 4, 2025, and signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Uzainu Abdullahi. The letter, addressed to the Kaduna State Chairman of the ADC, directed that El-Rufai and the listed individuals appear before the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on Monday, September 8, 2025.

The police stated that the invitation is part of ongoing investigations following petitions received against the accused persons. Although the details of the complaints were not disclosed, authorities stressed that the step was necessary to maintain peace and public order in Kaduna State.

Conspiracy Allegations Against El-Rufai and ADC

In the letter, titled “Investigation Activities: Case of Criminal Conspiracy, Inciting Disturbance of Public Peace, Mischief, and Causing Grievous Hurt,” the police made it clear that the case under review involves members of the ADC, including some prominent figures within the party’s Kaduna structure.

The letter read in part:

“This Department is currently investigating the above-mentioned case involving the following members of your party. You are requested to come along with them to SCID to clarify allegations reported against them by the complainants on September 8, 2025.”

Those listed for interrogation alongside El-Rufai include Bashir Sa’idu, Jafaru Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed (also known as “30”), Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini (popularly called “Mikiya”).

This development has generated significant interest, given El-Rufai’s prominent political stature as a former governor and influential figure in national politics.

Political and Security Implications

The police invitation to El-Rufai and his associates comes at a politically sensitive time in Kaduna State, where party alignments and grassroots movements remain intense. Analysts note that the charges — ranging from criminal conspiracy to incitement and causing bodily harm — suggest serious allegations that could potentially escalate tensions if not handled with caution.

Kaduna State has historically been prone to political rivalries and occasional violent confrontations. Authorities say their priority is ensuring that political activities and disputes do not degenerate into lawlessness or civil unrest. By summoning the former governor and ADC leaders, the police appear to be signaling their commitment to addressing potential threats to peace, regardless of the personalities involved.

El-Rufai’s Political Trajectory and ADC’s Growing Influence

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who served as governor of Kaduna State between 2015 and 2023, is widely regarded as a controversial yet influential figure in Nigerian politics. Known for his outspoken stance on national issues, El-Rufai has remained a key voice in political discourse even after leaving office.

His recent association with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party traditionally seen as an alternative to the dominant All Progressives Congress (APC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has drawn attention. Observers believe that his involvement may be part of broader political realignments ahead of future elections.

The inclusion of senior ADC members in the police invitation underscores the growing visibility of the party in Kaduna State. However, facing such allegations may test the party’s organizational stability and its ability to withstand political pressures.

Police Emphasize Due Process

While speculation continues regarding the nature of the allegations, the Kaduna State Police Command has emphasized that the invitation should not be interpreted as an indictment. Instead, it is a procedural step in response to complaints that require clarification.

By summoning El-Rufai and the other ADC leaders, the police aim to give them an opportunity to present their side of the story, thereby ensuring fairness and due process. Authorities insist that the move is strictly in line with maintaining law and order, and not politically motivated.

Security experts argue that transparency will be critical in ensuring public trust in the process. If handled professionally, the investigations could set a precedent that reinforces accountability in political activities across the state.

Reactions and Expectations

As of the time of writing, neither El-Rufai nor the ADC leadership has issued a formal public response to the police summons. However, party loyalists are expected to rally behind their leaders, potentially framing the situation as political intimidation.

Civil society groups and political observers have urged restraint, calling on all parties to respect legal processes and avoid actions that may inflame tensions. The expectation is that the invited individuals will honor the summons and cooperate with investigators to clarify the issues at hand.

If found culpable, the accused could face significant legal consequences, ranging from fines to imprisonment, depending on the severity of the charges. Conversely, if cleared, the outcome could bolster El-Rufai’s and ADC’s political standing by portraying them as victims of undue harassment.

The invitation of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai and other ADC leaders by the Kaduna State Police Command marks a significant development in the state’s political landscape. With allegations of conspiracy, incitement, mischief, and grievous hurt under investigation, the case has the potential to reshape political narratives in Kaduna.

While details of the complaints remain undisclosed, the stakes are high. For El-Rufai, this episode represents both a legal and political test. For the police, it is a chance to demonstrate impartiality and uphold law and order. Ultimately, how this case unfolds could influence not only the reputation of the ADC but also the broader perception of justice and accountability in Nigerian politics.
