The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has warned that it will sanction parents, guardians, and school proprietors who obstruct or fail to comply with ongoing child immunisation directives.

Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), issued the warning during a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday.

Fasawe emphasised that immunisation is a critical public health intervention aimed at protecting children from preventable diseases. She said the administration would not tolerate any act of negligence or resistance capable of jeopardising the success of vaccination campaigns across the six area councils of the FCT.

“We have received reports that some parents and even some school owners are refusing to allow health officials access to children for immunisation. This is unacceptable,” Fasawe stated.

She added that such actions not only endanger the affected children but also pose risks to public health and community safety.

According to her, the administration has put in place mechanisms to identify and take legal or administrative actions against individuals or institutions found obstructing the immunisation exercise.

“Vaccines save lives. Every child in the FCT deserves protection. Any parent, guardian, or school that refuses to cooperate with health workers will face appropriate sanctions,” she said.

The FCTA recently launched a renewed immunisation drive targeting diseases such as measles, polio, and diphtheria amid rising concerns over outbreaks in some parts of the country.

Fasawe urged parents to present their children for vaccination at designated centres or cooperate with mobile immunisation teams visiting communities and schools.

She also called on religious and community leaders to support the campaign by encouraging compliance and dispelling myths and misinformation surrounding vaccines.

The ongoing exercise, she noted, is part of Nigeria’s efforts to meet national and global health targets for child survival and disease eradication.
