NationalThere was a heavy security presence on Monday at the National Headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja as the party’s National Vice Chairman (North Central), Abdulrahman Mohammed, formally assumed office as the Acting National Chairman.

Mohammed, who arrived at the party headquarters with a large number of supporters, had earlier addressed them at the PDP FCT office, declaring his readiness to take over leadership responsibilities in his new capacity.

His emergence follows a declaration by the Samuel Anyanwu-led faction of the National Working Committee (NWC), which had earlier announced the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagun, and National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.

As Mohammed took over the national secretariat, Damagun and other NWC members loyal to him were noticeably absent, further highlighting the deepening division within the main opposition party.

It would be recalled that Damagun’s camp had earlier announced the suspension of National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, and several other principal officers, citing alleged misconduct and anti-party activities.

In a counter move, the Anyanwu faction swiftly convened a meeting where it announced the suspension of Damagun, Ologunagba, and four other senior party officials, accusing them of undermining party unity and overstepping their authority.

The ongoing leadership tussle has thrown the PDP into a fresh wave of internal crisis, raising questions about the party’s cohesion ahead of future elections.
