APC Governors Pass Vote of Confidence on President Bola Tinubu

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have passed a strong vote of confidence on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, praising his leadership style, policy direction, and commitment to stabilising Nigeria’s political and economic landscape. The governors, under the umbrella of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), made the declaration after a closed-door meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of the forum, its chairman and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, said the APC governors remain firmly aligned with the President and his Renewed Hope agenda. He described Tinubu’s administration as one working under intense pressure but making “courageous, necessary, and transformational decisions” aimed at resetting the country’s economic path.

GovernorsAccording to Uzodimma, the vote of confidence was not just ceremonial but a reaffirmation of the governors’ belief in the President’s ability to steer Nigeria through its current challenges. He emphasised that the APC governors were more united than ever and committed to supporting the President, especially as his reforms begin to take shape across sectors.

He said the meeting was largely centred on updates regarding ongoing reforms, security, economic stability, and coordination between the states and the federal government. Uzodimma noted that although some of the reforms—particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market—have been met with criticism, the forum believes they are foundational steps required for long-term national prosperity.

The Imo governor maintained that Tinubu inherited a fragile economy, dwindling revenues, massive debt servicing obligations, and structural challenges that demanded urgent and bold interventions. “The President has taken decisions that previous administrations were afraid to take,” he said, adding that the governors recognise his resilience and vision.

Governors present at the meeting reportedly praised the administration’s efforts in boosting revenue generation, improving collaboration with states on infrastructural projects, and strengthening national security architecture. They also commended the government’s renewed engagement with international partners, noting that Nigeria’s global perception is gradually improving due to the President’s proactive diplomacy.

A key highlight of the briefing was the governors’ call for Nigerians to exercise patience as the administration continues to roll out programmes targeted at easing the impact of reforms. They acknowledged the rising cost of living but assured citizens that the federal and state governments are working in synergy to cushion the effects.

Uzodimma said several state-level interventions—ranging from palliatives to agricultural support and targeted social programmes—are aligned with the federal government’s broader roadmap. He added that the governors were satisfied with Tinubu’s assurances on accelerating food production, stabilising energy supply, and expanding social investment programmes.

Meanwhile, political observers believe the vote of confidence is significant, especially at a time of increasing political tension within the ruling party. With internal power blocs, early maneuverings ahead of future elections, and criticisms from some APC stakeholders, the public endorsement by all governors sends a message of cohesion and loyalty to the presidency.

Analysts also note that the gesture may strengthen Tinubu’s hand in managing party affairs, implementing reforms, and maintaining influence over the political structure. Some party insiders say the move could help calm nerves within the party’s hierarchy and reinforce the perception that the President retains strong grassroots and institutional backing.

The vote of confidence also comes amid reports that some APC leaders have expressed discomfort with the economic challenges facing the country and their potential impact on the party’s popularity. However, the governors insisted that the party must stay united, adding that Tinubu’s administration remains on the right path.

In his remarks during the meeting, President Tinubu reportedly thanked the governors for their solidarity and urged them to remain committed to delivering dividends of democracy at state levels. He emphasised the importance of unity within the party and warned against internal divisions that could weaken the APC’s ability to govern effectively.

Tinubu also assured the governors that the federal government is working tirelessly to accelerate economic recovery. He outlined plans to strengthen security operations nationwide, expand infrastructure investments, and push more aggressively for agricultural self-sufficiency—particularly in rice, maize, and wheat production.

The President emphasised that his administration will continue to implement difficult but necessary reforms with transparency and fairness. He appealed for continuous collaboration between the federal and state governments to ensure that policies translate into tangible benefits for Nigerians.

The APC governors, in a joint statement, reiterated their commitment to the success of the Tinubu administration and promised to continue mobilising support across the country. They expressed optimism that the reforms underway will soon yield positive results that will be felt in households, markets, schools, and workplaces.

They also pledged to strengthen coordination with federal ministries and agencies to accelerate developmental projects across states. “We stand with Mr President today, tomorrow, and throughout this journey of rebuilding our nation,” the forum declared.

As Nigeria continues to navigate multiple economic and security challenges, the endorsement from APC governors signals a strong show of political backing for President Tinubu. Whether this unity will translate into improved governance outcomes in the coming months remains a key question on the minds of Nigerians.
