Assures That Due Process is Being Followed in Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Case

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has assured that the Nigerian Senate is taking the necessary steps to address the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Speaking ahead of International Women’s Day, the First Lady emphasized that the Senate should remain a place of honor and not controversy.

The allegations stem from a heated confrontation on February 20, when Akpoti-Uduaghan refused to move from her reassigned seat in the upper legislative chamber. Following the incident, she alleged that her troubles in the Senate began after rejecting Akpabio’s sexual advances.

On Wednesday, March 6, 2025, Akpoti-Uduaghan formally submitted a sexual harassment petition against Akpabio. However, the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges dismissed the petition, citing procedural breaches and legal limitations.

First Lady Urges Lawmakers to Maintain Senate Integrity

Addressing the controversy, Oluremi Tinubu urged lawmakers to uphold the dignity and integrity of the Senate, stressing the importance of maintaining the chamber’s honor.

“I know with what is going on in the Senate, you may ask why I am not taking a position. I believe the Senate is doing what is needful because that’s what it is. We shouldn’t be hearing things like this. It’s a mature chamber, and it should be treated with respect. It is an honor for you to be in that place alone,” she stated.

Encouraging Women to Assert Themselves in Leadership

As a former senator who represented Lagos Central for 12 years, Oluremi Tinubu reflected on her own experiences in the Senate and urged women to assert themselves and demand respect in leadership positions.

She advised women against tolerating inappropriate behavior, saying:

“I was there for 12 years, even in my younger days. People always compliment you. Women, raise yourself; don’t be in a position where men will talk to you anyhow. You can always shut them down before they start.”

Recognizing Women’s Achievements and Future Prospects

The First Lady also acknowledged the progress Nigerian women have made over the years, highlighting the contributions of figures like Zuriel Oduwole, a peace advocate and global youth leader.

She urged young professionals and aspiring female leaders to remain resilient, confident, and proactive in their pursuits, emphasizing the need for women to break barriers and take up leadership roles.

As the controversy surrounding the Senate’s handling of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations continues, Nigerians will be watching closely to see if further actions are taken to address gender equality and workplace conduct in the country’s legislative arm.
