Rivers APC Gives Governor Fubara 48-Hour Resignation Ultimatum Or Face Impeachment
Political Crisis in Rivers State Escalates Amid APC’s Threats
The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding his resignation or face impeachment proceedings.
At a press conference in Port Harcourt on Monday, the party accused the governor of committing several impeachable offenses, as referenced in a Supreme Court judgment. The APC alleged that Fubara has been governing with only 12.5 percent of State Assembly members, failed to properly present the budget, and mishandled local government elections.
Governor Fubara Faces Criticism For Political Isolation In Rivers State
APC Chairman Criticizes Fubara’s Actions
Tony Okocha, the APC Chairman in Rivers State, strongly criticized Governor Fubara’s recent invitation to the State House of Assembly, calling it “absurd” and “embarrassing.”
“The current political situation in the state does not warrant a meeting of connivance, as outlined in the governor’s letter to the lawmakers, but strictly business,” Okocha stated.
He questioned why the governor was discussing the Assembly’s sitting venue, arguing that lawmakers have been holding sessions without issues. He also dismissed budget discussions as unnecessary, insisting that the budget should be implemented, not debated.
Impeachment Threat and Political Tension
Okocha further warned that Fubara is “sitting on a keg of gunpowder”, claiming that the governor ignored previous warnings from the party.
“We warned him, but he rebuffed our advice, claiming he has the ‘red biro.’ Where is the ‘red biro’ now?” Okocha asked sarcastically.
Meanwhile, the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly reconvened this morning, with sources revealing that key agenda items include:
- Declining the governor’s invitation
- Budget presentation discussions
- Questioning members of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC)
With these developments, the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State appears far from over, raising concerns about the stability of governance in the state.
