Kano, Nigeria – The sports community across Nigeria is in mourning following a devastating motor accident that claimed the lives of at least 20 athletes from the Kano State contingent. The tragic crash occurred at the Dakatsalle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, as the athletes were returning from the just-concluded National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The athletes, who had represented Kano State with pride and vigor, were being transported in a bus carrying about 30 passengers when the vehicle reportedly lost control and plunged off the bridge. The result was catastrophic.

Confirming the heartbreaking news, the Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Fagge, stated grimly, “As I am talking to you now, we have counted 19 dead bodies.” He added that emergency responders were still working at the scene while several survivors were being rushed to hospitals for urgent medical attention.

Fagge expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as one of the darkest days in the history of Kano’s sporting development. “These were promising young Nigerians who gave their all in service to the state and the nation,” he said.

Former Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ado Salisu, who was also on the ground, corroborated the reports. He confirmed that the injured were being transported to Kura General Hospital, while rescue teams continued efforts to recover more victims and provide aid to survivors.

FRSC: Investigation Underway

Although the exact cause of the accident is yet to be officially determined, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano Sector Command, Abdullahi Labaran, said: “We just received the report of the accident, so I cannot confirm the exact number of casualties at the moment.” He noted that an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances leading to the fatal crash.

The incident has thrown the entire nation into grief, with an outpouring of condolences from across the sporting world. Many are questioning the safety standards of transportation provided for athletes who travel long distances under intense fatigue and harsh road conditions.

A Call for Accountability and Reform

This tragedy has reignited the debate around road safety and the welfare of Nigerian athletes. Many Nigerians are now calling for urgent government intervention to improve transportation arrangements for national and state contingents during sports events.

Athletes are often transported in poorly maintained vehicles across hundreds of kilometers of treacherous roads, with little regard for rest periods, proper vehicle checks, or emergency preparedness. Advocates say this tragedy must serve as a turning point for reform.

“We can’t keep sacrificing our youth to road accidents that are avoidable. There must be consequences and better planning going forward,” said a concerned coach who requested anonymity.

Sports analysts and human rights groups are also demanding a comprehensive review of the safety protocols governing official sports events, particularly those involving state-sponsored transport. There are calls for mandatory insurance, certified vehicle inspections, and trained drivers for all such assignments.

Grief Turns to Resolve

In Kano, the state government has declared a period of mourning, with flags flying at half-mast and sporting activities suspended. Vigils are already being organized in memory of the young athletes whose lives were cut short on a journey meant to celebrate their dedication and talent.

For their families, teammates, and communities, the pain is overwhelming—but it is also laced with a desire for justice and change. The message is clear: no athlete should die in the line of duty due to preventable transport failures.

As the nation grapples with the enormity of the loss, President Bola Tinubu and key figures from Nigeria’s sports administration are expected to issue formal statements in the coming days, and possibly announce measures aimed at preventing such occurrences in the future.

The crash at Dakatsalle Bridge is a tragic reminder that beyond medals and trophies, the safety and dignity of athletes must come first. Nigeria mourns not just the death of 20 young sportsmen and women—but also the systemic failures that led to it.
