In a major milestone for Nigeria’s energy sector, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery announced on Sunday that it will officially commence the nationwide distribution of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), widely known as petrol, and diesel on August 15, 2025. The development marks a transformative phase in Nigeria’s fuel logistics and supply chain, aiming to enhance fuel availability, reduce transportation costs, and boost economic growth.

The announcement came with details of a large-scale logistics deployment. Dangote Refinery revealed that it is rolling out 4,000 brand-new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tankers. This eco-friendly fleet is set to revolutionize fuel delivery by increasing accessibility and reliability of fuel supply across urban and remote locations in the country.

Dangote’s Distribution Drive: A Game-Changer in Nigeria’s Fuel Sector

According to a statement released by the refinery, the distribution initiative is designed to support marketers, petrol station owners, manufacturers, telecom companies, aviation operators, and other bulk fuel consumers. These groups will benefit from direct fuel supply along with complimentary logistics services.

As part of the strategy to ensure seamless delivery, Dangote Refinery is also investing in the development of daughter booster CNG stations nationwide. These stations will serve as secondary hubs to reinforce supply capacity, especially in areas where traditional fuel delivery infrastructure is weak.

In addition, a dedicated fleet of over 100 gas-powered tankers will be utilized to streamline delivery logistics. This dual-pronged logistics approach—leveraging both primary CNG-powered trucks and secondary booster networks—promises to address historical fuel distribution challenges that have long plagued Nigeria’s downstream petroleum industry.

“This initiative underscores our commitment to building a more sustainable, cost-effective, and robust fuel delivery system in Nigeria,” the statement read. “The use of CNG-powered tankers aligns with our drive toward energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.”

The refinery emphasized that free delivery services will be an integral part of the logistics support offered. By absorbing the costs typically associated with fuel transportation, Dangote aims to lower operational costs for industries and businesses that rely heavily on petroleum products.

Such cost reductions are expected to be felt most significantly in sectors like manufacturing, telecoms, and aviation—industries where energy costs constitute a large share of total operational expenses.

Industry experts have lauded the move as a bold and necessary intervention. For decades, Nigeria has struggled with fuel importation and inefficient distribution systems. Dangote Refinery’s move is viewed as a major shift toward self-sufficiency in petroleum supply, particularly given the refinery’s capacity of 650,000 barrels per day—making it Africa’s largest single-train refinery.

The company’s decision to utilize CNG-powered vehicles is equally significant. It aligns with global and national efforts to decarbonize the transportation sector while reducing dependency on diesel-powered logistics solutions. The environmental benefits of this initiative could also attract positive international attention and possible green financing opportunities.

As the August 15 rollout date approaches, preparations are reportedly in full gear. Marketers and major fuel consumers have been encouraged to establish partnerships with the refinery to secure early access to the distribution service. Stakeholders say the development may not only ease fuel scarcity in many parts of the country but also stabilize pump prices through increased supply and improved logistics.

In a concluding note, Dangote Refinery reiterated its vision of supporting national economic development through innovation, sustainability, and efficiency. “This is not just about fuel distribution,” the company emphasized. “It is about building a stronger, more resilient energy ecosystem for Nigeria.”

With the launch set just weeks away, all eyes are now on how this bold initiative will reshape Nigeria’s fuel economy and potentially serve as a model for other nations facing similar distribution challenges.
