The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised the alarm over what it describes as a covert and dangerous attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration to stifle opposition forces across Nigeria. In a strongly worded statement released on Monday, Bolaji Abdullahi, the Interim National Publicity Secretary and National Coalition Spokesperson of the ADC, claimed that clandestine meetings are being held with former state chairmen and top party executives in the North East and North West regions.

According to the ADC, this is not an ordinary political maneuver but a deliberate sabotage of Nigeria’s multiparty democracy. The party accuses key figures within the federal government of engineering this plot to destabilize its internal structure and derail the momentum of the newly formed opposition coalition.

“We have credible intelligence that the aim of this meeting is not for national security or peacebuilding. It is to intimidate, coerce, and if possible, co-opt these individuals into a fabricated scheme against the opposition coalition. This is not politics. This is sabotage,” the statement emphasized.

ADC Warns of Threat to Multiparty Democracy

The ADC insists that the covert engagements represent a direct assault on Nigeria’s democratic foundations. The statement went further to express fears that such acts, if left unchecked, could lead to the emergence of a de facto one-party state—a scenario the ADC views as highly dangerous in a constitutional democracy.

“This surreptitious dalliance with ADC State Chairpersons by appointees of the federal government who should be focused on urgent national security priorities… is a coordinated assault on multiparty democracy. This is how one-party states are born—through intimidation,” it declared.

The ADC referenced recent political moves, including the July 1st Coalition Declaration and the July 2nd unveiling of a revitalized ADC, as triggering events that may have sparked panic within the APC. These moves, the party said, appear to have posed a credible challenge to the ruling party’s dominance and have prompted a campaign of infiltration and manipulation.

“It is now obvious that the Tinubu administration—having lost the trust of the Nigerian people—cannot withstand the pressure of a united and credible opposition,” the party stated.

A Call for Presidential Accountability

In an emphatic appeal, the ADC called on President Bola Tinubu to demonstrate his commitment to democratic principles by reining in the activities of his appointees. The party warned that the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy is at stake if opposition parties are deliberately weakened or undermined.

“We call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take note of this sinister move by some of his appointees and call them to order,” the statement urged.

The party drew a stark historical parallel, reminding the President that his own political ascent was made possible by the democratic openness under former President Goodluck Jonathan. The ADC argues that any attempt to subvert opposition parties now would represent both a betrayal of that legacy and a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s political future.

“The president needs to prove to Nigerians that he is indeed a Democrat. He needs to remind his men that if the Goodluck Jonathan administration were as intolerant and as subversive of the opposition, the APC would not have come to power in 2015,” the statement noted.

The ADC concluded with a vow to resist any undemocratic interference using all lawful and democratic means available. The party said the coalition it represents is “an idea whose time has come” and reaffirmed its mission to offer Nigerians a credible, just, and people-centered alternative to the current administration.

As Nigeria moves deeper into a post-election political cycle, these allegations could fuel broader tensions between the ruling party and opposition forces. While the federal government has yet to issue a formal response, political observers warn that such claims, if substantiated, could erode public trust and widen existing fault lines in Nigeria’s fragile democratic landscape.
