Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has marked his inauguration for a second term by granting clemency to 43 convicts. This move is in line with the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.¹

15 condemned inmates who were sentenced to death by hanging have had their sentences commuted to various prison terms.

20 other convicts serving life imprisonment have had their sentences adjusted to more lenient terms.²

According to Dr. Ajulo, this decision reflects Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in second chances and rehabilitation. The governor’s action aligns with his efforts to address issues within the penal system and promote the reintegration of individuals into society as productive members.³
