Lagos, Nigeria – Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), firmly stating that he has no intention of defecting to any other political party, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This declaration came on Monday after his courtesy visit to President Bola Tinubu in Lagos.

Addressing journalists shortly after the meeting, Fayose acknowledged the deepening crisis within the PDP but dismissed speculations that he is plotting a defection. The visit, he clarified, was personal and not politically motivated, further reiterating that his allegiance remains with the PDP.

Fayose: PDP Is Troubled, But I’m Not Leaving

Responding to questions regarding the increasing wave of defections from the PDP to the APC, Fayose stated unequivocally that his loyalty to the PDP remains intact. “Let me first of all clear this. Ayo Fayose will not move from PDP to any political party, not even APC. I am this year, 65 years,” he stated firmly.

While he acknowledged the challenges facing the PDP, Fayose emphasized that each individual has the right to make their own political decisions. He admitted that those leaving the party often cite reasons such as the commendable performance of the President or the instability within the PDP. “It is within the choices of those who have chosen to move. Some said they saw what the President is doing, some said they believe that the party is in trouble—and without doubt, the PDP is in trouble. And that is the gospel truth,” he declared.

Fayose warned that if urgent steps are not taken to address the crisis, the PDP risks becoming politically irrelevant. “If they don’t quickly take steps, the party in itself will become carcass, and that is the truth,” he warned.

Support for Tinubu Rooted in History, Not Partisan Shift

Despite his staunch stance on remaining in the PDP, Fayose expressed open admiration for President Tinubu. He noted that his support for the President predates his visit, tracing it back to his time as Ekiti State Governor, even when he belonged to the PDP.

“My visit is personal, to further encourage him to continue what he is doing for Nigerians. No one is saying it’s easy, and there is no miracle that can turn things around overnight, but for the little the President has done, we must commend him,” Fayose said, striking a conciliatory tone.

He praised President Tinubu’s ongoing reforms, arguing that the early signs of economic recovery and institutional restructuring deserve recognition. This rare commendation from a prominent PDP chieftain to a sitting APC President adds a nuanced layer to the current political dynamics.

When asked about what efforts are being made within the PDP to recover from its ongoing internal strife, Fayose said he has stepped back from front-line party leadership. While not directly involved in the reconciliation process, he urged current party leaders to act swiftly to prevent further deterioration.

Fayose’s Loyalty Statement Sends Signal Amid Political Realignments

In the current Nigerian political climate, where defections are commonplace and party allegiances shift frequently based on changing interests, Fayose’s bold declaration may serve as a stabilizing signal for the PDP. His statement also implicitly challenges the PDP leadership to confront its internal crisis with urgency and effectiveness.

Analysts note that Fayose’s public support for Tinubu—despite remaining in the opposition—could be a strategic move to maintain political relevance while staying rooted in his party. It also reflects the evolving political etiquette in Nigeria, where inter-party civility may become more prominent in shaping national unity and democratic growth.

Fayose’s comments come at a time when Nigeria’s political terrain is undergoing significant transformation, with many figures adjusting to new alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections. His message is clear: he is not switching sides, but he is not shying away from acknowledging good governance—even from the other side of the political divide.

As political observers keep watch on further developments, Fayose’s vocal allegiance to the PDP and his call for reforms could either galvanize renewed unity within the party or highlight its continued fragmentation.
