Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke is embarking on a strategic overseas mission this week as he travels to London for a series of high-level investment engagements. The visit will include participation in the Commonwealth Business Forum, along with other targeted investment summits aimed at opening Osun State to international capital and sustainable development partnerships.

In a world increasingly driven by globalization and cross-border collaboration, Adeleke’s mission underscores the renewed push by Nigerian subnational governments to actively court foreign investors. With global economies exploring new frontiers, Osun State is positioning itself as a viable destination for investment in agriculture, infrastructure, tourism, and the creative industries.

Strengthening Economic Ties with the UK

One of the key highlights of Governor Adeleke’s London visit will be a strategic meeting with the UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Nigeria. This engagement is expected to serve as a launchpad for bilateral discussions around trade partnerships, investment in Osun’s emerging markets, and access to British investment vehicles that can stimulate infrastructure development across the state.

According to sources close to the governor’s delegation, Adeleke will use the opportunity to present Osun’s newly reformed investment framework, which includes several policy innovations designed to attract and protect both local and foreign investors.

The governor is expected to emphasize the following key reform areas:

  • Reduction in infrastructure deficits, especially in road networks, energy access, and rural connectivity.
  • Harmonization of the tax system, which simplifies business operations and removes bottlenecks for entrepreneurs.
  • Enhanced security for lives and property, a critical concern for any investor evaluating risk.
  • A 45-day window for processing Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) for business-related land use, ensuring swift acquisition of legal land documents.

These reforms have already begun yielding results. Since November 2022, Osun State has played host to over 100 potential investors, with more than half translating into active projects across vital sectors such as agro-processing, light manufacturing, and ICT.

Cultural Diplomacy at the British Museum

Beyond trade and economic discussions, Governor Adeleke’s itinerary includes a scheduled visit to the British Museum, one of the world’s foremost institutions in arts and history. The visit is not merely symbolic—it aims to foster collaborations in the creative and cultural sectors, areas in which Osun boasts rich heritage and untapped global appeal.

By leveraging the state’s cultural identity and artistic wealth, Adeleke hopes to establish strategic partnerships that could see Osun’s traditional arts, festivals, and tourism attractions exported to international audiences. Plans include potential collaborations on exhibitions, research, and the preservation of Yoruba heritage, particularly in the wake of increasing global interest in African history and artifacts.

The visit could also open discussions on cultural repatriation and digital documentation of Osun’s extensive artistic lineage.

A Call for Unity Among Traditional Rulers

Meanwhile, even as he prepares for international engagements, Governor Adeleke has not lost sight of domestic affairs. Back home in Osun, he issued a public appeal to traditional rulers, urging them to act as unifiers and avoid public conflicts that may sow discord within their communities.

In a statement issued from the governor’s office, Adeleke reminded the royal fathers of their age-old role as custodians of peace, harmony, and community leadership.

“Our royal fathers are the age-long custodians of peace and unity in their towns and villages. They are symbols of harmony and serve as grassroots mediators,” he stated.

He further added that any internal disputes within the Council of Traditional Rulers should be resolved discreetly to prevent public spectacle or unnecessary tension.

“We cannot afford a situation where royal fathers are seen openly fighting one another. Left unchecked, such conduct may fuel communal tension,” Adeleke warned. “I urge our revered monarchs to be mindful of their public utterances in the interest of unity and peaceful coexistence across the state.”

The governor’s appeal follows recent reports of public disagreements among some traditional rulers in the state—a development that observers fear could lead to local instability if not promptly addressed.

A Balanced Leadership Approach

Governor Adeleke’s dual focus on international investment attraction and internal stability reflects a comprehensive leadership strategy. While positioning Osun on the global map, he is also reinforcing the foundation of peace at home—a necessary condition for any meaningful development to take root.

As he meets with top investors and cultural stakeholders in London, expectations are high that these engagements will translate into tangible outcomes for Osun State, particularly in job creation, revenue generation, and improved infrastructure.

The results of this trip could very well define the next phase of economic growth and cultural recognition for the state, as Adeleke seeks to merge heritage with progress on both local and international fronts.
