Reclaims Influence, Appoints Five Top Chiefs in Kano Emirate

In a significant move reinforcing his traditional authority, the reinstated 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has officially appointed five senior traditional titleholders, including a new Galadiman Kano. This development follows his dramatic return to the royal seat and signals a renewed era of leadership within the Kano Emirate.
Among the newly honored chiefs, Alhaji Munir Sanusi Bayero emerged as the Galadiman Kano, topping the list of prominent appointees. Other notable figures include Alhaji Kabir Tijjani Hashim, District Head of Nassarawa, who now carries the title of Wamban Kano; Alhaji Mahmud Ado Bayero, District Head of Gwale, who has been elevated to Turakin Kano; Adam Lamido Sanusi, who now bears the title of Tafidan Kano; and Alhaji Ahmad Abbas Sanusi, appointed as Yariman Kano.

Galadiman Kano: A Key Symbol in Emirate Traditions
The announcement was made during a grand turbaning ceremony held at the Emir’s Palace on Friday, attended by a wide range of dignitaries and traditional elites. In his address, Emir Sanusi II emphasized the critical roles these appointments play in the sustenance and progression of Kano’s rich traditional heritage.
“You have been chosen based on your track records and that of your families,” Sanusi declared, acknowledging their contributions to the emirate. “Most of you have demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the emirate and our lineage and have contributed immensely to supporting the poor and advancing society. I urge you all to emulate your forebears. May God guide you in discharging your duties.”
The ceremony served not only as a traditional rite but also as a symbolic gesture of Emir Sanusi II’s reaffirmed presence and leadership following his reinstatement. It witnessed the presence of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, members of the Kano State executive council, traditional and religious leaders, family members, and well-wishers from across the region.
Each title conferred reflects a deep-rooted tradition within the emirate’s governance structure, often reserved for individuals with significant influence, noble ancestry, or a record of public service. These roles are both ceremonial and administrative, playing a vital part in community leadership and cultural preservation.
A Parallel Ceremony Reflects Kano’s Divided Royal Landscape
However, the day was not without controversy. In a parallel event, the deposed 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, also conducted a turbaning ceremony at the Nassarawa mini palace. There, he appointed Alhaji Sunusi Lamido Ado Bayero as the Galadiman Kano, marking a rare instance of conflicting traditional appointments within the same emirate.
This competing ceremony underscores the ongoing tension surrounding the Kano emirship, where political undercurrents have at times clashed with age-old traditional practices. Observers note that such dual appointments could further complicate efforts to unify the emirate under a single leadership framework.
Despite the backdrop of political friction, Emir Sanusi II’s ceremony was widely seen as an assertion of legitimate traditional leadership, one supported by a blend of lineage, public perception, and official state backing.
As Emir Sanusi II strengthens his court with loyal and accomplished titleholders, many in Kano view these appointments as a strategic move to consolidate authority and preserve the cultural fabric of the emirate. His speech, calling for integrity and service to the people, signals an emphasis on responsible leadership rooted in heritage and progress.
Going forward, the Kano Emirate stands at a pivotal moment, navigating its complex intersection of tradition, politics, and public trust. With trusted allies now surrounding the Emir, many hope this marks the beginning of a more unified and forward-looking era for the storied northern kingdom.
