Akure, Ondo State – Tragedy struck in the heart of Akure over the weekend as a young commercial sex worker lost her life following a violent confrontation at a popular brothel in the Cathedral area of the city. The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three individuals in connection with the incident, which is now under thorough investigation.

The unfortunate event unfolded when the deceased, whose identity remains undisclosed for security reasons, reportedly complained of exhaustion and was unable to continue a sexual engagement with a customer. The customer, who had paid ₦15,000 for the service, reacted angrily, leading to a heated argument between himself, the sex worker, and the brothel’s manager.

Argument Turns Violent Over Refund Dispute

According to Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Ondo State Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, what began as a verbal disagreement quickly spiraled into a volatile confrontation. The customer, infuriated by the situation, demanded a refund of his payment, which the sex worker and manager reportedly declined.

“The customer fled the premises but returned shortly after with a group of associates, intent on recovering the money by force,” Ayanlade stated. “By the time a police patrol team arrived, the group was in the process of trying to forcibly retrieve the money.”

During this confrontation, the condition of the sex worker rapidly deteriorated. Witnesses at the scene reported that she collapsed, prompting the police and bystanders to rush her to a nearby health facility. Sadly, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Victim’s Death Prompts Arrests and Investigation

Following the tragic incident, three suspects were arrested at the scene by police operatives. The authorities also revealed that two other individuals believed to be directly involved in the altercation are currently at large.

The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and discreet investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police is taking this matter seriously. We are determined to uncover the full circumstances that led to the unfortunate death of this young woman,” Ayanlade said. “All suspects will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.”

The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital mortuary, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Brothel Management Under Scrutiny

While the police focus on the immediate suspects, attention has also turned to the management of the brothel. There are growing calls from local advocacy groups and community leaders for a broader investigation into the practices of the establishment and others like it in the area.

“This incident raises serious questions about the safety and rights of women working in such environments,” said a representative of a local women’s rights organization who asked not to be named. “There is an urgent need for regulation, support, and protection for sex workers, who remain vulnerable to abuse, violence, and neglect.”

Community Reacts With Shock and Concern

Residents of the Cathedral area of Akure, where the incident occurred, expressed shock and concern over the deadly confrontation. Some described the brothel as a long-standing feature of the neighborhood, often associated with unruly behavior and late-night disturbances.

A local shop owner, who gave his name simply as Tunde, said, “We’ve always known that place to be a hotspot, but no one expected something this serious to happen. It’s sad and disturbing.”

Other community members called on the government to increase monitoring of such establishments and to provide alternative empowerment opportunities for women, particularly those in precarious economic conditions.

Broader Implications and Need for Reform

This incident has reignited discussions about the legal and social status of sex workers in Nigeria, many of whom operate without legal protection or health safeguards. Despite the existence of these establishments, commercial sex work remains largely unregulated and criminalized in many states, leaving workers exposed to abuse without recourse.

Advocates are calling for a reevaluation of current laws and a shift toward human rights-based approaches that prioritize health, safety, and justice for vulnerable individuals.

“This young woman died needlessly, and it speaks volumes about how society treats sex workers,” said human rights lawyer Adebayo Ogunleye. “We cannot continue to pretend these people don’t exist. It’s time for policy reforms that include them in conversations about public safety and access to justice.”

Next Steps in the Investigation

As the police continue their manhunt for the remaining suspects, they are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in their apprehension. The Ondo State Police Command has assured that justice will be served and that all those responsible for the tragic death will be held accountable.

“We are appealing to anyone with useful information to come forward. This case is a priority for us, and we will not rest until all parties involved are brought to justice,” Ayanlade affirmed.

The Ondo State Police also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding all residents, regardless of their profession or background.
