A tragic incident occurred at a ceramics company in Igbesa, Ogun State, where a police inspector, Ajele Oloyede, reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while on duty. The heartbreaking event, which took place on Thursday, has left the police force and local community in shock.

The distressing discovery was made by an officer from the Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos, identified as Tolorunloju Stephen. Stephen had just returned from Ikeja at approximately 1:20 p.m. when he found Oloyede resting his head on a table inside the security office of the ceramics company.

Colleague Discovers Incident Moments Too Late

According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Omolola Odutola, Oloyede was stationed at the company as part of its security detail.

Stephen, upon noticing his colleague in an unusual posture, inquired about his well-being. Oloyede, however, reassured him that everything was fine.

Shortly after, Stephen placed his bag and pistol on the table and stepped into the restroom. Moments later, a sudden gunshot echoed through the security office.

“Moments later, a gunshot was heard,” Odutola confirmed.

Upon rushing back, Stephen found Oloyede lying in a pool of blood, unresponsive.

Emergency Response and Pronouncement of Death

Realizing the severity of the situation, Stephen, with the assistance of private security personnel at the company, immediately transported the wounded officer to Ota General Hospital in an attempt to save his life. Unfortunately, medical personnel at the hospital pronounced Oloyede dead upon arrival.

“With the help of private security personnel, the wounded officer was immediately rushed to Ota General Hospital, but he was later pronounced dead by the doctor on duty,” Odutola stated.

Police Recover Firearm, Launch Full-Scale Investigation

Following the incident, law enforcement officials promptly arrived at the scene to conduct preliminary investigations. Oloyede’s service pistol was recovered as evidence, and his body was deposited at Ota General Hospital for an autopsy.

Authorities have confirmed that the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, where a detailed investigation will be carried out to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

Odutola reassured the public that all necessary procedures are being followed, stating:

“His family has been notified, and a full investigation is now underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
