A security consultant, Dr. Agodi Kanu, has urged the Federal Government to prohibit election-related prophecies and predictions as Nigeria prepares for its next general elections. Speaking during an interview in Gombe State on Tuesday, Kanu argued that such predictions pose significant threats to national peace and security.

Concerns Over Election Prophecies

Dr. Kanu noted that many clerics have turned election predictions into a habit, claiming divine insight into election outcomes. He warned that such practices could undermine the credibility of the electoral process and fuel political tensions.

“These predictions often contradict one another, leading to confusion among followers,” he stated. “One cleric says Candidate A will win, another says Candidate B, and yet another proclaims Candidate C as the winner—all claiming divine backing. This breeds division and conflict.”

Potential Security Risks

According to Kanu, such conflicting prophecies could spark violence, as followers of religious leaders may refuse to accept election results that do not align with their expectations. He stressed that the government must take action to prevent post-election crises fueled by religious and political misinformation.

“Tensions are built up because followers believe their pastors or imams cannot lie. This could lead to anger, deception, and a hostile electoral environment,” he warned.

Call for Government Action

Dr. Kanu urged the Federal Government to pass legislation banning election-related prophecies, arguing that religious leaders who wish to engage in politics should do so openly rather than influencing voters under the guise of prophecy.

“If clerics want to be politicians, they should drop their religious garments and join politics,” he asserted. “We cannot continue allowing this to jeopardize our democracy.”

Impact on Democratic Choice

The security expert also highlighted how such prophecies interfere with free and fair elections. He explained that voters should choose candidates based on personal convictions and party manifestos, not on religious predictions.

“More than 90% of these so-called prophecies do not come to pass,” Kanu added. “Some clerics now use this as a means to scam politicians, making a mockery of religion.”

A Growing Debate

As Nigeria moves closer to another election cycle, Kanu’s call has sparked discussions on the role of religion in politics. While some argue for the freedom of religious expression, others warn that unchecked political prophecies could escalate tensions and lead to unrest.

With past elections witnessing heated political rhetoric and post-election disputes, the debate over election prophecies is likely to continue, especially as the country seeks to strengthen its democratic institutions.
