Senate Committee Bars Her from National Assembly Premises

The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District, for six months following her sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The decision, which has sparked controversy, was based on the recommendations of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

The committee, in its report submitted on Thursday, March 6, 2025, not only recommended her suspension but also ordered that her salary and security details be withdrawn for the entire suspension period. Additionally, the committee stated that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan should not be seen within the National Assembly premises during her suspension.

Allegations Against Senate President Akpabio

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension follows a recent confrontation in the Senate, during which she refused to comply with a seat reassignment ordered by Senate President Akpabio. After the incident, she granted a television interview where she accused Akpabio of sexually harassing her and deliberately sidelining her legislative motions.

According to her, Akpabio had consistently prevented her from raising motions on the Senate floor and allegedly suggested she visit his office to discuss the matter. She further claimed that when she met with him privately, the Senate President implied that she would receive favorable treatment in return for personal favors.

These allegations have sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political landscape, with reactions pouring in from both supporters and critics of the embattled senator.

Public Reactions and Legal Implications

The suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has sparked mixed reactions from political observers, civil rights groups, and the general public. Some have condemned the decision as an attempt to silence a female lawmaker who dared to challenge the powerful Senate leadership. Others argue that her accusations were baseless and damaging to the reputation of the Senate.

Women’s rights organizations have called for an independent investigation into the allegations, stressing the need for accountability in cases of power abuse and harassment. Some legal experts have also suggested that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan could challenge her suspension in court, citing potential violations of her rights as an elected representative.

As the controversy unfolds, the suspension raises critical questions about gender dynamics in Nigerian politics, the integrity of the Senate, and the broader fight against harassment and abuse of power. Nigerians are now closely watching to see whether this matter will be resolved through legal means or political negotiations.
