State Creation: Tension As Remo Committee Insists On Sagamu As Capital

The Remo Committee submitted its report to Oba Babatunde Ajayi, the Akarigbo and supreme monarch of Remoland, and demanded that the capital of the new state be located in Sagamu, adding a new dimension to the call for the creation of Ijebu State from the former Ijebu Province.

According to reports, the Ijebu people and their brothers, Remo, have not yet agreed on the name of the new state or the location of the capital in their desire to establish Ijebu State from the existing Ogun State.

The Remo people think that if Ijebu State had the name, Sagamu would unavoidably be the state capital, but the Ijebu people appear to desire both the name and the capital to be at Ijebu-Ode.

The Remo people, however, are quite unique to Ijebu, having come from Iremo Quarters in Ile Ife, according to a document signed by Aare Kola Oyefeso, the chairman of the Remo committee. They will never permit their uniqueness to be subdued under any pretext.

The committee contended that Ogun East, also called Ijebu Province, is the only province formed prior to independence in 1960 that has not yet been recognized as a state, making the bid for state creation unique.

It further stated that it has conducted extensive consultations in order to reach its conclusions regarding the location of the capital, Sagamu.

As evidenced by statistics, the committee also called for the establishment of additional local governments to handle the inflow of residents from nearby Lagos State.

According to a portion of the communiqué, “The Remo people are different from the Ljebus because they migrated from Remo Quarters, Ile-Ife, and kept in touch with their roots.”
