Tinubu Hails Shettima at 59, I Did Not Make A Mistake In Choosing You’ – Tinubu To Shettima
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has celebrated Vice President Kashim Shettima as he marks his 59th birthday, describing him as a loyal partner, dependable ally, and an exemplary public servant whose contributions continue to strengthen the administration’s vision for Nigeria.
In a personal statement issued on Tuesday, the President reaffirmed his confidence in Shettima, stressing that he made no mistake in selecting him as his deputy ahead of the 2023 presidential election. According to Tinubu, Shettima has demonstrated loyalty, competence, and dedication since assuming office on May 29, 2023.
“Today, September 2, 2025, presents me with another unique opportunity to celebrate you, my brother, partner, and Vice President, as you mark another birthday,” Tinubu wrote in the statement.
The President lauded Shettima’s courage, tenacity, and commitment to the collective mission of building a more prosperous nation. He noted that Shettima’s service record as former Governor of Borno State and Senator representing Borno Central reflected his philosophy of leadership as service, not privilege.
“You served the people of Borno, your home state, excellently as Governor for eight years and later as Senator representing Borno Central in the National Assembly,” Tinubu said. “In both roles, you showed that leadership is service, even in the face of immense challenges.”
Tinubu further commended Shettima for bringing passion and fresh ideas to the presidency, pointing out that his contributions have reinforced the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He highlighted Shettima’s involvement in forging international partnerships, driving food security, and supporting economic reforms as evidence of his strong leadership.
“Every day, as Vice President, you have justified my choice by strengthening our work, bringing fresh perspectives, and upholding our commitment to Nigerians. Your dedication reassures me that I did not make a mistake in choosing you,” Tinubu added.
Reflecting on their joint accomplishments, the President said the duo has begun laying foundations for significant national progress. He cited ongoing reforms in trade, agriculture, healthcare, education, and job creation as part of the administration’s efforts to improve living standards across the country.
“Together, we have begun to lay the foundations of the Renewed Hope Agenda. From securing new global partnerships across the Atlantic to driving food security and investment reforms at home, your partnership has been integral to our success,” Tinubu noted.
The President also emphasized that his bond with Shettima transcends political office, describing their relationship as a symbol of unity across regions and traditions. He said the Vice President’s example underscores the importance of putting Nigeria first, a principle that should guide future leaders.
“Our relationship transcends official duties. It is a bridge across regions and traditions, united in purpose and service. You remind us of what is possible when Nigeria comes first, an example worthy of emulation,” he said.
Tinubu concluded by wishing the Vice President renewed strength, wisdom, and many more years of impactful service to Nigeria. “On this occasion of your 59th birthday, I heartily wish you renewed vitality, wisdom, and more years of impact. Happy birthday, Kashim, and many happy returns!” he said.
Born on September 2, 1966, Shettima has had a distinguished career in banking, academia, and politics. He served as Commissioner in various ministries in Borno State before becoming Governor in 2011, where he gained recognition for managing the state during the peak of the Boko Haram insurgency. After two terms as Governor, he was elected Senator for Borno Central in 2019 before being nominated as Tinubu’s running mate in 2022.
Shettima’s political journey and his close partnership with President Tinubu continue to shape the direction of the current administration, with both leaders pledging to deliver on their campaign promises under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
