Oyo Township Under Night Curfew as “Oro Ipebi” Commences
Oyo – The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba AbdulAkeem Owoade, has officially commenced the 21-day traditional rites known as “Oro Ipebi”, marking a significant step towards his coronation. The announcement was made by the Chief of Staff to the Alaafin, Mr. Rotimi Osuntola, in a statement issued in Ibadan.
The rites, which began on March 7, 2025, will conclude on Saturday, March 29, 2025. According to the statement, Oro Ipebi is a sacred tradition that must be observed before the new Alaafin is formally crowned.
Strict Curfew Imposed During the Ritual Period
As part of the tradition, a night curfew has been imposed on Oyo township from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM daily throughout the 21-day period. The statement emphasized that:
“It is essential to understand that Oro Ipebi entails the incoming Alaafin entering a state of absolute seclusion, a sacred tradition that must be honored by all.”
Security agencies have been directed to enforce the curfew, and anyone found violating it will face immediate arrest and detention until 7:00 AM the following morning. Residents have been urged to comply with the restrictions to maintain peace and respect for the traditional process.

Coronation Set for April 5, 2025
Following the completion of Oro Ipebi, the official coronation ceremony for Oba AbdulAkeem Owoade will take place on Saturday, April 5, 2025, in Oyo town.
The Alaafin’s ascension is a momentous occasion in Yoruba culture, signifying the continuity of the Oyo royal lineage. The completion of Oro Ipebi will pave the way for the final rites leading to the official installation of the new monarch.
