The FCT Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Olusola Odumosu, has stressed that drug control must be treated as a national security priority to safeguard communities and protect Nigeria’s future.

Odumosu made the call in Abuja after receiving the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award at the 7th Security and Emergency Management Awards and Lecture (SAEMA).

Expressing gratitude to the organisers and stakeholders, Odumosu praised the event’s forward-thinking theme, “Drug Control and National Security: Innovation for a Safer Tomorrow.”

He described the theme as timely, warning that drug abuse and illicit trafficking continue to threaten communities, critical infrastructure, and the wellbeing of Nigerian youth.

“The harmful link between substance abuse, crime, terrorism, vandalism and social instability demands bold, innovative strategies across institutions,” he said.

Odumosu reaffirmed the NSCDC’s commitment to protecting lives, securing national assets and enhancing community safety, noting that innovation must lead the response, especially in intelligence gathering, technology deployment, community engagement and collaboration among stakeholders.

“These approaches are essential to building safer neighbourhoods, empowering young people and securing a stable future for our nation,” he added.

He commended the organisers for maintaining a platform that recognises excellence in security management, noting that such awards highlight the importance of teamwork in safeguarding society.

Odumosu also urged government bodies, private organisations, civil society and community leaders to strengthen their collective commitment to tackling drug abuse.

“As we celebrate today, let us also resolve to work together towards a Nigeria where safety is guaranteed, innovation thrives and drug abuse has no place,” he said.
