Stakeholders at a public hearing on the Ogun State Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Commission Bill have given unanimous support to the proposed legislation, describing it as a crucial step toward strengthening social justice, advancing equitable representation, and safeguarding vulnerable groups across all sectors of society.

Participants representing civil society organizations, professional bodies, and advocacy groups said the bill would institutionalize fair practices and expand protection frameworks for marginalized individuals and communities.

They called for stronger collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government to fast-track the bill’s passage and secure early assent from the governor.

Stakeholders also recommended that the global DEI standards referenced in the draft bill be clearly defined to aid proper implementation.

Declaring the hearing open, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly (OGHA), Mr. Oludaisi Elemide, explained that the proposed law was crafted to promote public orientation, equity, and inclusion as essential ingredients for peaceful coexistence in the state.

The sponsor of the bill and Deputy Speaker, Mrs. Bolanle Ajayi, emphasized that the legislation seeks to entrench fairness, broaden representation, and prohibit discrimination in all its forms. She noted that the commission would serve as a catalyst for inclusive governance and social harmony.

Also speaking, the Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Adijat Adeleye, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the DEI agenda, adding that both branches of government consider the bill a priority.

She highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure that public facilities comply with accessibility and inclusion standards.

Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Chief Whip, Mrs. Omolola Bakare, said the proposed commission would provide a structured platform for marginalized groups to actively participate in governance, economic activities, and social life, thereby strengthening the state’s commitment to equality and inclusive development.
