Abia Government Approves Recruitment of 5,300 Teachers, More to Follow
In a major stride toward revitalizing the education sector, the Abia State Government has announced the recruitment of 5,300 teachers who successfully scaled through the rigorous selection and interview process. The development was disclosed during a press briefing in Umuahia on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, following the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
This recruitment drive, one of the most expansive in the state’s recent history, reflects Governor Otti’s administration’s resolve to tackle the shortage of teaching staff in public schools and restore quality education across all levels in Abia.

Teachers’ Recruitment: A Boost for Education in Abia
According to Kanu, the recruitment exercise was carefully structured to ensure that only qualified and competent candidates were selected. “We are pleased to announce that 5,300 teachers have successfully gone through the recruitment interviews and have been approved for employment in our public schools,” he stated.
He emphasized that the recruitment was not just about filling vacancies but about strategically deploying skilled personnel to areas where the need is most pressing. “This is a deliberate effort by the government to strengthen our public education system by ensuring that we have qualified teachers in our schools, particularly in rural areas where shortages have long persisted,” Kanu added.
The exercise followed a transparent selection process that prioritized merit and equal representation across the state’s local government areas.
Second Batch of Teachers to Be Recruited Soon
In a move to sustain the momentum, the state government has also confirmed that a second phase of recruitment is on the horizon. The online recruitment portal, which was used in the first phase, will soon be reopened to allow more qualified individuals to apply.
“We are not stopping at 5,300. Another batch of recruitment will commence shortly. The portal will be reopened to give more Abians an opportunity to serve in our education sector,” Kanu confirmed. This second phase is expected to further reduce the teacher-to-student ratio and support the implementation of the administration’s vision of universal access to quality education.
The decision to expand the recruitment pool has been lauded by educators and stakeholders as a step toward solving the chronic problem of teacher shortage in the state’s primary and secondary schools.
Focus on Higher Education: Vacancies in ABSU to Be Filled
Beyond the basic and secondary education levels, the State Executive Council also approved the recruitment of academic staff at Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu. The move aims to fill critical teaching positions in key departments that have been affected by staff retirements and resignations.
Kanu highlighted that this development underscores the Otti administration’s commitment to building a well-rounded education system that spans from the foundational level to tertiary institutions.
“Lecturers of various categories will be recruited to fill existing gaps in critical areas of study at Abia State University,” he noted. These include fields such as science, engineering, technology, and medicine, which are essential for driving the state’s developmental agenda.
The university’s management has been tasked with conducting a needs assessment and submitting its recommendations to ensure that the recruitment aligns with the institution’s long-term academic goals.
A Renewed Commitment to Human Capital Development
Governor Alex Otti’s administration has consistently prioritized education as a cornerstone of its development strategy. The large-scale recruitment of teachers and lecturers is part of a broader plan to reposition Abia as an educational hub in the South-East and Nigeria as a whole.
Experts believe that this renewed focus on education will have far-reaching effects on the state’s human capital development, with potential benefits in employment, innovation, and socio-economic progress.
Stakeholders, including the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and student associations, have commended the government’s proactive approach, urging it to sustain the tempo by providing adequate teaching tools, training, and prompt remuneration for the new recruits.
As Abia continues to set a standard for educational reform, the successful onboarding of 5,300 teachers and the impending recruitment of additional educators marks a new chapter for learning and capacity-building in the state.
