LAGOS: As the tenure of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inches closer to its final lap, the political terrain of Lagos State is gradually heating up with early signs of an intense power tussle for the 2027 gubernatorial seat. Several political blocs, prominent individuals, and interest groups within the All Progressives Congress (APC) are already pushing for their preferred candidates, each hoping to shape the future of Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Among the most talked-about potential contenders is Femi Gbajabiamila, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and currently the Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His name continues to generate buzz across Lagos, with a growing number of APC stakeholders and supporters tipping him as a strong aspirant.

Gbajabiamila: Executive Edge Meets Legislative Depth

Gbajabiamila’s close proximity to power and extensive legislative experience make him a formidable choice. A key supporter, Famous Oloyede, an APC chieftain in Surulere, remarked: “Gbajabiamila is not just a seasoned legislator. Now as Chief of Staff to the President, he has added executive experience. That’s the kind of leadership Lagos needs.”

However, not everyone is sold on the idea. Concerns have been raised about his age—he will be 64 in 2027—and calls for generational shift and geographical equity have added layers to the debate. “It’s time another administrative district takes the seat,” said a senior party figure, citing the need for regional balance within Lagos.

IBILE Factor: Agitations for Fair Rotation Intensify

Lagos operates under the IBILE structure, comprising Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Epe. Since 1999, governors have largely emerged from Lagos Island and Epe, fueling agitation among underrepresented regions.

The Epe axis, still nursing wounds from the unceremonious exit of Akinwunmi Ambode, is championing a comeback. The name Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, the current Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, is being floated as a loyal and competent choice to restore the region’s relevance.

“Ambode was not allowed to complete his second term, unlike others before him. It’s time to correct that injustice,” stated Olugbede Adekalu, a staunch APC supporter from Epe.

Mudashiru Obasa: The Silent Strategist

Another quiet but potent contender is Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Known for his grassroots connections and deep-rooted political networks, Obasa recently hinted at his interest without making a full declaration.

Speaking during a public forum, he said, “Becoming governor is secondary; it is something I have not given serious consideration. Nevertheless, that does not mean I am too young or lack experience to run.”

His strategic ambiguity is viewed as a political test balloon, aimed at gauging public and internal party reaction.

Seyi Tinubu and the Shadows of Dynasty Politics

In a move that has drawn mixed reactions, Seyi Tinubu, son of President Tinubu, is being speculated as a possible aspirant. While he hasn’t made any public indication of intent, some diaspora APC support groups are actively pushing his candidacy. The idea has, however, raised concerns about political dynasties and fairness within the party.

President Tinubu’s continued silence on the matter has left observers and party leaders in suspense. The influential Governance Advisory Council (GAC) is said to be in a tight spot, trying to balance loyalty to the President with the party’s broader interest and Lagos’ zoning demands.

Ikorodu Rising: A Quest for Real Representation

The Ikorodu Division, one of the most populated and politically active regions, is also making its case for the top seat. While the current Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, hails from Ikorodu, many believe the region deserves full governorship.

Two names dominate local discussions: Rep. Babajimi Benson and Hamzat himself. However, if the ticket slips away, insiders suggest Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chair of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, could be fielded as a deputy governor candidate, keeping the zone within the power orbit.

“Ogunleye’s 14-day tenure as deputy governor in 2007 doesn’t count,” said a party source from Ogolonto. “Ikorodu deserves more than a symbolic gesture.”

Badagry and the Long Wait for Recognition

Badagry, another administrative zone within IBILE, remains the only division never to have produced a governor since 1999. This has fueled growing agitation within the APC family in the region.

“Power should shift to Badagry now. We’ve waited long enough,” said a party member. While no standout name has emerged, the demand for inclusion is gaining traction across party lines.

Senator Tokunbo Abiru: The Banker-Politician in the Wings

From Lagos East, which includes Epe, Ikorodu, Ibeju-Lekki, Somolu, and Kosofe, Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru is another name silently gathering momentum. The former banker has maintained a low political profile but is regarded as capable, technocratic, and non-controversial—qualities that could make him a consensus candidate if the field becomes too divided.

As Lagosians await formal declarations, the race for the 2027 governorship is shaping up to be one of the most intense and consequential in the state’s political history. With the IBILE rotation debate gaining steam and multiple power blocs jostling for dominance, the eventual APC flagbearer will have to navigate a complex web of regional expectations, party loyalty, youth demands, and dynastic sensitivities.

What is certain is that Lagos’ political chessboard is being re-arranged—and every move matters.
