Jose Mourinho Banned And Fined In Turkey Over Racism Scandal

The Turkish Football Federation has fined Fenerbahçe manager Jose Mourinho more than €40,000 and banned him from four games.

Jose Mourinho’s comments following the latest Istanbul derby against Galatasaray, which resulted in a 0-0 tie, led the Turkish FA to decide to penalize him severely.
The Galatasaray bench’s responses during a difficult period were described by Mourinho as “jumping like monkeys” in his post-match remarks, which was taken as offensive.

He also voiced worries over officiating, arguing that a Turkish referee, rather than Slovenian official Slavko Vinčić, could have caused more problems for the game.

In response, Galatasaray issued a statement denouncing Mourinho’s comments as racially offensive and threatening legal action. In response, Fenerbahçe claimed that Mourinho’s remarks were misinterpreted and taken out of context.

Mourinho was given a two-match suspension for his remarks about the fourth official and another two-match suspension for his remarks about the Galatasaray bench after the Turkish Football Federation’s disciplinary council decided on Thursday, February 27, that his statements were against sporting ethics.

Fenerbahçe is presently six points behind Galatasaray in the league rankings, thus these changes will make it harder for the second-place team to catch up to the defending champions.
