BENIN CITY – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has sounded the alarm over the devastating economic toll of cultism, estimating that the state loses over $1 billion annually in potential investments due to sustained violence and insecurity. The Governor’s renewed commitment to eradicating cult-related violence was disclosed by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, who highlighted the massive disruptions this menace has caused to economic growth and social stability.

Cultism, particularly violent clashes between rival groups, has plagued Edo State for years, leading to not just tragic losses in human lives and property, but also crippling its investment and tourism appeal. As Governor Okpebholo steps up efforts to combat the scourge, he is calling on Edo citizens—home and abroad—to join the drive to rebuild and restore the state’s economic prospects.

“The scale of destruction caused by cult-related violence in Edo State cannot be overstated,” said Itua during a recent press briefing. “What we have witnessed is more than a disruption of public peace—it has been a major economic hemorrhage.”

According to data referenced by Itua, the Diaspora Commission reports that Edo tops the chart of states receiving the highest amount in remittances from abroad. Shockingly, however, 95% of those funds are redirected to other states due to security concerns. Fear of violence has discouraged diaspora investors from returning to Edo, leading to lost opportunities in real estate, agriculture, tourism, and other vital sectors.

“This loss in disposable income, business closures, and the near collapse of tourism has severely damaged our business environment,” Itua said, attributing this alarming trend to unchecked cult activity over the past five years—long before Governor Okpebholo took office.

However, the narrative is beginning to shift. Since declaring an all-out war on cultism, Governor Okpebholo has launched a multi-pronged strategy involving law enforcement, community engagement, and institutional reforms. The approach appears to be yielding results, with several groups—including community leaders and civil society organizations—rallying behind the governor’s mission.

“Sanity is returning to Edo State, especially in Benin City,” Itua declared. “Our people, both in Nigeria and in the diaspora, are now encouraged to bring their investments back home. The tide is turning.”

According to him, key investment sectors such as hospitality, agriculture, and real estate are now ripe for development, as the state reclaims its lost potential. Governor Okpebholo’s administration is also cleaning up land administration processes, making it easier and safer for investors to acquire and develop property in the state.

“Edo has the land, the skills, and now, the political will to ensure that businesses succeed. Our administration will provide all necessary support to protect these investments,” Itua added.

Beyond restoring peace, Governor Okpebholo sees economic revitalization as central to permanently eradicating the root causes of cultism. The state is promoting youth empowerment through agriculture, skill acquisition, and industrial development to reduce the allure of violent groups.

“Agriculture offers a sustainable pathway to prosperity. With adequate support, our youth can turn to farming, processing, and agribusiness instead of crime,” said Itua.

Efforts are also underway to attract large-scale investments in commercial farms, hotels, and small-scale industries. The government is offering guarantees to investors, promising a safer and more enabling business environment.

Acknowledging that government alone cannot win the war against cultism, Governor Okpebholo is actively involving all sectors of society. Community leaders, youth groups, religious institutions, and civil society actors are being engaged to promote peace and vigilance in their communities.

“This fight is not the governor’s alone. It’s a collective responsibility. If we want to see a prosperous Edo, every citizen must be a part of the solution,” Itua emphasized.

He reassured residents and potential investors that Governor Okpebholo is unwavering in his commitment to security, prosperity, and sustainable development.

“Edo State has too much potential to be held hostage by violence,” Itua concluded. “Governor Okpebholo is determined to change the story. With partnership, peace, and progress, we will reclaim Edo’s future.”
