Oyo Police Command Disburses ₦20.12bn to Widows of Fallen Officers
In a solemn and deeply emotional ceremony held on Tuesday, the Oyo Police Command presented cheques totaling ₦20.12 billion to 7,076 widows of slain police officers. The symbolic event took place at the Command Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, and served as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the nation’s fallen law enforcement heroes.
The presentation, described by many as historic, marked a significant step in the ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to prioritize the welfare of the families left behind by officers who died in the line of duty. The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Johnson Adenola, who officiated the ceremony, reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to supporting police dependents and ensuring no family is left abandoned after the death of their loved ones in service.

CP Adenola Reaffirms Police Commitment to Welfare of Bereaved Families
In his address, CP Adenola expressed heartfelt condolences to the widows and families in attendance, acknowledging the depth of their loss and the emotional toll that comes with the sudden death of a loved one.
“To the families of our fallen heroes, I extend our sincere condolences. We understand the heavy burdens—emotional and financial—that accompany such devastating losses,” Adenola said.
He stressed that while financial compensation cannot replace the lives lost, it can provide much-needed relief to ease the burden during this difficult period.
“We stand in solidarity with you and assure you that your sacrifice and that of your loved ones will never be forgotten,” he added.
Over 7,000 Widows Receive Relief in Landmark Disbursement
The beneficiaries of the ₦20.12 billion payout, numbering 7,076, include widows and dependents of officers who died while serving the nation. The distribution was described by the Command as the largest of its kind in recent years in Oyo State and an affirmation of the police force’s evolving welfare programs.
CP Adenola disclosed that efforts were already underway to ensure that all pending and unprocessed insurance claims for families not yet captured would be swiftly addressed. “There are some beneficiaries whose documentation is still in progress. I want to assure them that they will not be left out. The Nigerian Police Force is committed to settling all outstanding claims in due course,” he said.
Technology Revolutionizes Police Insurance Claims Process
The Commissioner also unveiled the Nigeria Police Insurance Claim Management Portal—an innovation he described as a transformative initiative under the leadership of IGP Egbetokun. According to him, the digital platform is aimed at improving transparency, eliminating bureaucratic red tape, and speeding up claim settlements.
“This platform is a major step forward in our drive to modernize internal processes,” CP Adenola stated. “With this new system, beneficiaries can track their claims online, avoid unnecessary delays, and receive timely support.”
The digital transformation of the insurance claims process is part of broader reforms by the Nigerian Police Force to leverage technology in improving operational efficiency and the welfare of its personnel, both serving and retired.
IGP Egbetokun Commended for Proactive Welfare Policies
During the ceremony, CP Adenola extended gratitude to IGP Kayode Egbetokun for what he described as a “bold and compassionate” leadership style that places a premium on the lives and families of police personnel. He noted that the Inspector General has consistently prioritized staff welfare across all commands, a policy direction that has begun to yield tangible results, especially in the area of family support and compensation.
The event also witnessed emotional testimonies from widows who expressed their appreciation for the unexpected financial relief. Many recounted years of struggle following the deaths of their husbands and described the cheques as a lifeline that would help them stabilize their homes and cater to their children’s education and health needs.
A Renewed Hope for Families of Fallen Heroes
With the successful disbursement in Oyo State, the Nigerian Police has sent a strong message to its rank and file: the sacrifice of officers will not be forgotten, and their families will be cared for. The move also underscores the force’s broader strategic direction toward institutional empathy and social responsibility.
As the ceremony concluded, CP Adenola called for continued support for the Nigeria Police Force from all quarters of society. “The strength of any nation lies in how it treats its defenders and their families. Let us work together to uplift those who gave their lives to protect our peace.”
