Sir Ahmadu Bello

In a significant development aimed at promoting transparency, good governance, and public accountability, the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation has announced a two-day interactive session slated for May 20 and 21, 2025, in Kaduna. The event will serve as a performance assessment forum for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Director-General of the Foundation, Abubakar Umar, the session is designed to critically evaluate the federal government’s performance, measure the implementation of electoral promises, and foster government-citizen engagement.

Kaduna Event Places Tinubu’s Government Under Public Microscope

The Kaduna session, according to the Foundation, will bring together key stakeholders from the Federal Government, civil society, academia, and the general public. The core objective is to bridge the disconnect between policy implementation and public perception, thereby creating an avenue for clarifying misconceptions and dispelling misinformation about government actions.

“This landmark event builds on our prior engagement of October 17, 2022, when leading presidential candidates—including now President Bola Tinubu—presented their policy agendas and pledged commitments to Northern Nigeria,” said Umar.

The 2025 session will focus on evaluating the Tinubu administration’s progress in national security, agricultural productivity, food security, economic growth, infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and governance.

Foundation’s Commitment to Transparency and Democratic Accountability

The Foundation has positioned this event as part of its broader mission to promote the values and legacy of the late Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto. Umar emphasized that forums like these are essential to sustaining democratic integrity by enabling citizens to constructively engage their leaders and hold them accountable.

“We believe such interactions are vital for sustaining trust between the government and its citizens,” Umar stated. “They help promote unity and ensure that the public remains actively involved in the democratic process.”

He added that strengthening dialogue between the people and their leaders is fundamental to national unity and informed public discourse. The Foundation remains dedicated to creating platforms that empower citizens to contribute meaningfully to governance.

Strategic Focus Areas: From Security to Socioeconomic Growth

High-level presentations and panel discussions will center around some of the most pressing issues confronting the country. These include:

  • National Security: Addressing the persistent threats of insurgency, banditry, and communal clashes, particularly in northern Nigeria.
  • Agriculture and Food Security: Evaluating government interventions aimed at boosting crop yields, securing farmlands, and stabilizing food prices.
  • Infrastructure and Social Services: Analyzing investments in roads, power, water supply, and housing, as well as access to quality education and healthcare.
  • Governance and Economy: Scrutinizing policy decisions, public sector reforms, and economic recovery plans amidst inflation and currency instability.

Umar reaffirmed that the Foundation’s objective is not to criticize but to objectively assess and inform the public, while also providing actionable recommendations for improvement.

Arewa Consultative Forum Also Launches Evaluation Initiative

Interestingly, this initiative comes just days after the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) disclosed its plan to set up a special committee tasked with reviewing President Tinubu’s policies and programs, particularly those affecting Northern Nigeria. At a meeting held in Kaduna last Wednesday, the ACF’s Board of Trustees Chairman, Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu, revealed that the forum had received several proposals from regional elders calling for a performance-based political support model ahead of the 2027 elections.

“As a matter of fact, we have received a number of proposals… that this body appoint a special committee that will conduct a detailed study and a review of the policies, projects and programs embarked upon by the current government and determine how they have impacted the various parts of the country, particularly northern Nigeria,” Dalhatu stated.

He warned that the North would no longer support politicians or parties that fail to promote regional interests. “All politics is local. Northern Nigeria will remain faithful not to particular politicians or political parties but to those who care about our regional interests and are willing to protect them,” he said.

With both the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation and the Arewa Consultative Forum initiating comprehensive reviews of the Tinubu administration’s performance, the political landscape is poised for increased scrutiny and public accountability. These efforts signal a shift toward issue-based politics and performance-driven support systems ahead of the next general elections.

As Nigeria continues to navigate complex governance challenges, platforms like the upcoming Kaduna session serve as crucial democratic instruments. They not only evaluate current progress but also shape the narrative for future policy directions and regional representation in national governance.
