Fresh violence has erupted in northern Nigeria as at least 15 people were confirmed dead following coordinated attacks on three villages in Katsina State. The tragic incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has once again raised concerns about the fragile peace in rural communities previously affected by banditry.

The affected communities—Farun Bala, Falale, and Kadobe—are located in Jibia Local Government Area, a region that had only recently begun to recover from years of insecurity. Residents were reportedly caught off guard as armed men stormed the villages, unleashing terror that left many injured and properties destroyed.

According to a senior local government official who spoke anonymously, the attack was a retaliatory move linked to an earlier confrontation. The clash reportedly involved local vigilantes and suspected repentant bandits who were moving through the area with cattle believed to have been stolen.

During that initial encounter, three suspected bandits were allegedly killed by local security operatives. This development, sources say, may have triggered the deadly reprisal.

The official explained that the situation quickly escalated after the killings. Armed groups reportedly regrouped and returned in large numbers, targeting the villages of Kadobe, Farun Bala, and Falale with coordinated attacks.

Eyewitness accounts described scenes of panic and destruction, as gunshots rang out and residents fled for safety. By the end of the attack, at least 15 lives had been lost, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the area in recent months.

“This was an area that had started enjoying peace after long negotiations,” the official stated. “Unfortunately, certain actions appear to have reignited tensions, leading to this devastating outcome.”

The incident comes roughly one year after a community-led peace agreement had brought relative calm to parts of Katsina. That agreement involved negotiations with armed groups, often referred to as repentant bandits, who had previously terrorized several local government areas.

Sources close to these groups have insisted that the peace deal technically remains in place. However, they warned that actions perceived as hostile—such as the killing of suspected members—could undermine the delicate balance that had been achieved.

Authorities have since responded to the crisis. The spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, Sadik Aliyu, confirmed the وقوع of the attack. Similarly, the state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, also acknowledged the incident.

In a statement, Mu’azu revealed that a joint security response was immediately activated. Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and Civilian Watch groups were deployed alongside community leaders to restore order in the affected areas.

Officials confirmed that calm has since been reestablished, although tensions remain high among residents who fear further attacks.

Security analysts note that the latest violence highlights the complexities of peace agreements with armed groups in the region. While such deals can bring temporary relief, they often remain vulnerable to breakdowns triggered by mistrust or isolated confrontations.

As communities in Jibia begin to assess the damage, the focus now shifts to preventing further escalation. For many residents, the امید for lasting peace remains uncertain, overshadowed by the painful memories of yet another deadly
