WAEC Orders Immediate Review Of 2025 WASSCE Results, Orders Candidates To Recheck Results

In an unexpected move, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a full-scale review of the recently released 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results. The decision follows the detection of significant technical glitches that have affected the integrity and accuracy of the results as initially published.
The council made this known in an official statement issued on Thursday, August 7, 2025, by its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina. The examination body emphasized that the glitches were the result of bugs discovered in the system after conducting a paper serialization process on key subjects. Consequently, WAEC has temporarily suspended access to its result checking portal to enable urgent rectifications.

Glitches Prompt Urgent Overhaul of WASSCE 2025 Results
According to WAEC, the affected subjects include Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics — some of the most critical subjects in the curriculum. These papers underwent serialization, a process designed to prevent malpractice by varying question arrangements. However, the system update introduced bugs that distorted the result computation for thousands of candidates.
“As a responsible examining body, we are committed to upholding the credibility and accuracy of our results,” Adesina stated. “The need to conduct a comprehensive review became necessary when we identified inconsistencies linked to technical issues in our system.”
As part of the corrective measures, WAEC has disabled access to the result checker portal to prevent further confusion or dissemination of inaccurate results. Candidates who had previously accessed their results have been advised to recheck them after a 24-hour window, starting from Thursday, August 7.
The temporary shutdown of the portal was first noticed late Wednesday, sparking concern among candidates and schools. By Thursday morning, WAEC officially confirmed that the downtime was deliberate and linked to an internal review process triggered by the bugs discovered.
WAEC Reassures Candidates, Promises Fix Within 24 Hours
In her statement, Adesina also issued a formal apology on behalf of WAEC, acknowledging the inconvenience the disruption may have caused students, parents, and educators.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience this may cause our candidates and stakeholders. We are working around the clock to ensure the integrity of the results and restore full access to the portal within the next 24 hours,” she said.
WAEC has not disclosed the exact number of students whose results were affected by the glitch, but insiders suggest the issue could be widespread, considering the scale of the examination. Over 1.9 million students sat for the 2025 May/June WASSCE across more than 23,000 secondary schools in Nigeria alone.
While the council has assured the public that the issue is purely technical and not related to malpractice or data breaches, the situation has raised questions about the preparedness and reliability of WAEC’s digital systems in handling examinations of such magnitude.
Technical Setback or Systemic Flaw?
This isn’t the first time WAEC’s digital infrastructure has faced scrutiny. However, this latest episode stands out due to the scale of disruption and its direct impact on students’ futures. Many candidates rely on timely and accurate results to secure university admissions, scholarships, and job opportunities.
Education stakeholders have called on WAEC to not only fix the current bugs but also conduct a thorough audit of its IT systems to prevent a recurrence. Some have even recommended third-party oversight or independent reviews to bolster transparency.
“The integrity of public examinations is a matter of national importance,” said Dr. Ifeanyi Onuoha, an education policy expert. “WAEC must ensure that its systems are foolproof, especially in an era where technology is central to examinations and result management.”
Awaiting Resolution: Students Advised to Remain Calm
For now, WAEC has urged all affected candidates and schools to exercise patience while it completes the result review. The body remains confident that full access to the corrected results will be restored shortly.
Until then, the education sector, parents, and millions of anxious students across Nigeria await the final update from WAEC — hopeful that the adjustments will be completed without compromising the accuracy or credibility of the results.
WAEC is expected to release a follow-up statement confirming when the portal will be reopened and what specific adjustments, if any, were made to the released results.
For now, stakeholders are watching closely as the examination body works swiftly to address one of its most significant technical setbacks in recent years.
