Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, have raised serious concerns over the future of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the country could face a situation where only one presidential candidate emerges in the 2027 general election. Speaking at the fifth Comrade Yinka Odumakin Memorial Lecture in Lagos, both men criticized what they described as growing judicial interference in the internal affairs of political parties.

Falana pointed to the increasing use of conflicting court orders to destabilize party structures, arguing that such actions could weaken democratic competition and undermine the electoral process. He referenced the recent decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withhold recognition of factions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) pending a court ruling, describing it as part of a troubling trend. According to him, if the situation continues unchecked, Nigeria may reach a point where electoral contests become meaningless.
Gani Adams echoed similar concerns, warning that the country appears to be drifting toward a one-party system, where those in power allegedly use judicial processes to suppress opposition voices. Both speakers urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively defend democratic values, stressing that silence could allow the erosion of genuine political choice.

April 5, 2026, 9:25 amI'm not surprised with the comments of the both speaker, they're all speaking out of hatred against Tinubu, we know the handwriting, they're always consistence towards wrong doing against Tinubu
But the question I'll like to ask Mr Falana, is that, do we have law in this country? I believe the answer is yes, should we practice our law? If yes, why is he complaining?
Another question I'll like to ask Mr Falana were they still multiples political parties in Nigeria? Were they still registering political parties in Nigeria? If yes, why is he saying Nigeria is turning to one party system, did anybody say other parties should not put their homes in other, or did anybody say other parties should be cancel? So where do they get the ideal of Nigeria becoming party system from?
I can't blame Gani Adams, when he wrongly selected to be in the position he's not entitled to, why won't he be spewing out rubbish from his mouth
