Police officers on Monday disrupted a protest by pensioners under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Contributory Pension Scheme at the Lagos House in Ikeja.

The retirees had gathered at the government premises to demand action on issues affecting their welfare, including the implementation of approved pension increases and wage awards, as well as the payment of outstanding pension arrears and other benefits they claimed were owed by the Lagos State Government.

The protest, however, was disrupted when police officers reportedly fired tear gas at the pensioners, forcing some of them to disperse. The development heightened tension at the scene, with the retirees expressing anger over what they described as the use of force against elderly citizens who were peacefully demanding their entitlements.

The pensioners maintained that their demands were focused on the implementation of approved pension-related increases, payment of arrears and other outstanding benefits. They urged the Lagos State Government to urgently address their grievances and prevent further hardship among retired workers.
