Fatal Motorcycle Crash and Reckless Tricycle Driving Spark Safety Concerns in Ibadan
A tragic motorcycle accident and a separate case of reckless tricycle driving have once again drawn attention to the growing dangers of traffic law violations in Oyo State. The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) confirmed on Sunday that a fatal accident involving a TVS motorcycle occurred at Agbarigo, Mokola, Ibadan, leading to one death and two injuries.
The incident, coupled with a separate tricycle crash that seriously injured a pedestrian, has prompted renewed calls from authorities and citizens alike for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and better driver education.

In an official statement, the Chairman of OYRTMA, Adekoya Adesagba, confirmed that agency operatives were present at the scenes of both accidents and provided immediate rescue and emergency response.
The fatal motorcycle accident involved a TVS bike with the registration number LUY 306 UT, which reportedly lost control and caused the death of one individual while two others were rushed to the Oyo State Hospital at Ring Road for treatment. The names of the victims were not disclosed, pending family notifications.
OYRTMA officials not only facilitated the victims’ transfer to the hospital but also recovered a bag containing a significant sum of money. This was returned to the family of the deceased, a gesture that Adesagba said reflects the agency’s commitment to integrity and public trust.
Reckless Tricycle Rider Criticized for One-Way Violation
In a separate but equally alarming incident, a pedestrian identified as Oladayo Adisa was seriously injured after being struck by a tricycle that was driving against traffic—commonly referred to as “one-way” in Nigeria. The accident occurred near a petrol station in Ibadan on Thursday morning.
According to Chairman Adesagba, the reckless tricycle operator flouted traffic laws by speeding against oncoming vehicles, resulting in Adisa suffering serious facial injuries as he attempted to cross the road.
“The growing disregard for traffic laws, especially the rising trend of one-way driving, poses a serious threat to public safety,” Adesagba said. “Despite consistent government efforts, some individuals continue to endanger lives through sheer negligence.”
Eyewitnesses said the tricycle rider showed no remorse following the accident and claimed he lacked the financial means to help the injured man. Fortunately, the petrol station manager and OYRTMA officers acted swiftly to transport Adisa to a nearby hospital for urgent care.
Upon regaining consciousness, Adisa expressed gratitude to the traffic officials and the station manager, adding, “If OYRTMA catches any rider taking one-way, they should not release them until they are taken to court.”
Government, OYRTMA Vow Tougher Measures
Adesagba used the occasion to reaffirm the agency’s zero-tolerance stance on reckless driving. He warned that violators of traffic regulations would face the full weight of the law.
“The government will not tolerate this reckless behavior. We will continue to enforce traffic regulations rigorously to ensure the safety of all road users,” he asserted.
Adesagba also thanked the Oyo State government for its continued support in enhancing road safety, stating that OYRTMA remains dedicated to collaborating with stakeholders to make roads safer for residents and commuters.
Rising Concern Over Road Safety in Oyo State
The recent incidents in Ibadan underscore the growing concern about the behavior of road users in Oyo State. As traffic congestion continues to worsen, especially in urban areas, the need for improved driver education, awareness, and stricter law enforcement becomes increasingly critical.
Public outcry over one-way violations and reckless driving has intensified in recent months. While OYRTMA and other traffic authorities are stepping up enforcement, experts argue that only a combination of enforcement, education, and judicial penalties can bring long-term improvements.
Citizens Urged to Be Vigilant and Compliant
As the state battles with recurring traffic law violations, Adesagba called on residents to work with traffic authorities to ensure safer roads. He emphasized that road safety is a collective responsibility that requires cooperation from drivers, pedestrians, and law enforcement alike.
“Together, through shared responsibility and collaboration, we can make our roads safer for all,” he concluded.
With road accidents continuing to claim lives and cause severe injuries, the recent tragedies in Ibadan are a stark reminder of what’s at stake when traffic laws are ignored.
