ABUJA, Nigeria — The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said many political opponents wanted him to fail during the just-concluded local government election in the nation’s capital, but their efforts were unsuccessful, he said Monday. Wike made the remarks during his monthly media chat in Abuja, attributing the outcome to his political experience and support from key allies.

Wike, a former Rivers State governor, dismissed suggestions that he overshadowed the All Progressives Congress campaign council during the election.

“No. What do you mean by “overshadowing”? You were there when the deputy speaker said, “With the performance of the minister, they had no problem; that my performance made them win the election,” he said.

He expressed appreciation to APC governors who supported him during the poll, specifically thanking Gov. Abdulrahman and Gov. Dapo Abiodun for their concern and backing.

“With all due respect, I’d like to thank Governor Abdulrahman and Governor Dapo Abiodun. They were very concerned and gave me the necessary support,” Wike said.

“So many people wanted me to fail, but we had to tell them that we’re old in this game. I also commend Governor Ododo for coordinating Abaji LGA in the election,” he added.

The minister did not name those he accused of working against him but maintained that the election outcome reflected effective coordination and political strategy.
