PDP Accuses Akpabio Of Smear Campaign Against Former Akwa Ibom Governor
Allegations of Political Manipulation Surface
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of orchestrating a smear campaign against the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel. The opposition party claims that Akpabio is behind recent corruption allegations targeting Emmanuel, allegedly using fictitious figures to mislead the public.
In a statement issued by PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the party condemned what it described as a politically motivated attempt to tarnish the image of the former governor. The statement highlighted concerns over what it called a “well-oiled scheme” designed to compromise sections of the media and circulate false narratives against Emmanuel.
Nigeria Suffers Another Nationwide Blackout Amid Grid Challenges
PDP Defends Udom Emmanuel’s Governance Record
According to the PDP, Udom Emmanuel’s tenure as governor was marked by transparency and prudent management of resources. The party emphasized his achievements in infrastructure development, citizen empowerment, and human capital growth, listing key projects in aviation, manufacturing, education, healthcare, power, and housing.
The party further argued that Emmanuel’s leadership positioned Akwa Ibom as a model of good governance in Nigeria, making the allegations against him appear as a deliberate effort to discredit the opposition.
Call for Focus on National Issues
The PDP urged Senator Akpabio to shift his attention to pressing national issues rather than engaging in political distractions. The party stated that the challenges in the National Assembly require the Senate President’s full attention, rather than what it described as attempts to manipulate public perception for political gain.
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has yet to confirm or deny any ongoing investigation against Emmanuel. However, the PDP insists that any allegations being circulated are baseless and politically motivated.
As tensions continue to rise between the PDP and Akpabio, political analysts suggest that this development may be linked to broader power struggles ahead of future elections. The controversy highlights the ongoing friction between the ruling and opposition parties, raising questions about the potential influence of political interests in corruption allegations.
It remains to be seen whether the EFCC will take action on these claims or if the matter will fade as another episode in Nigeria’s complex political landscape.
