Training Aircraft Crash-Lands at Ilorin Airport, Two Seriously Injured in Incident
A routine training exercise turned into a distressing emergency on Thursday evening when a training aircraft crash-landed at Ilorin International Airport, resulting in serious injuries to two individuals onboard. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the accident in a statement issued on Friday, detailing that the incident occurred at approximately 17:28 local time on May 23, 2025.

According to Bimbo Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the NSIB, the aircraft was engaged in a simulated instrument approach procedure on Runway 05 when it unexpectedly veered off course. The plane eventually skidded off the runway and came to an abrupt stop on a grassy verge adjacent to the tarmac. Emergency response teams were quickly deployed to the scene and promptly evacuated the two injured occupants to a nearby medical facility for urgent treatment.
The identities of the pilot and co-pilot or trainees involved have not been disclosed at this time. However, officials have confirmed that both victims sustained severe but non-life-threatening injuries.
“This is a regrettable incident, and our thoughts are with the individuals injured and their families,” Oladeji said, adding that a comprehensive investigation is already underway to determine the exact cause of the mishap.
Investigators Mobilized as Authorities Seek Root Cause
In line with aviation safety protocols, the NSIB has initiated a formal investigation to ascertain what led to the crash-landing. While preliminary reports suggest no mechanical failure was initially apparent, investigators are examining several potential factors—including weather conditions, pilot error, and procedural adherence.
“We will thoroughly assess the aircraft’s black box data, crew communication logs, and training protocols employed during the simulated approach,” Oladeji noted. She emphasized that the bureau is committed to transparency and will release a preliminary report in due course.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has also expressed concern over the incident and assured the public that safety within Nigerian airspace remains a top priority. “Our teams are closely monitoring developments and will collaborate with NSIB to ensure any gaps identified are promptly addressed,” a spokesperson for the NCAA said on Friday.
Flight Operations Resume Amid Safety Reassurances
Following the incident, Ilorin International Airport temporarily suspended operations to allow emergency crews to secure the aircraft and inspect the runway for possible damage. However, normal flight operations resumed later the same evening after clearance was given by the relevant authorities.
The crash has once again brought aviation safety in Nigeria under scrutiny, particularly concerning training flights. Experts note that while flight simulations are crucial for pilot development, they must be conducted under strict safety conditions and constant supervision to avoid real-world risks.
A senior aviation analyst, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “Training accidents, while rare, underscore the critical need for constant equipment checks, instructor oversight, and risk mitigation strategies. It’s a wake-up call for all flight schools and aviation authorities.”
Aviation Community Reacts to Training Mishap
Within the aviation community, the Ilorin incident has prompted renewed calls for rigorous safety checks and enhancements in pilot training protocols. Various pilot unions and safety advocacy groups have emphasized the importance of constant equipment maintenance and scenario planning for unexpected situations during training.
This is not the first time the Ilorin International Airport has experienced a runway-related emergency. While the airport has a generally favorable safety record, stakeholders believe each incident should be used as an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s overall aviation framework.
As the investigation progresses, the NSIB is urging the public to refrain from speculating about the cause of the crash and to allow the official process to run its course. Meanwhile, the injured individuals continue to receive medical care, and updates on their condition are expected from the relevant hospital authorities in due time.
The final report from NSIB is anticipated to offer critical insights into the accident and may include recommendations to prevent similar occurrences in future training operations across the country.
