A Computer Science graduate of Lagos State University (LASU), identified on X as @mayomadee7, has inspired social media users after sharing his journey from struggling to gain university admission to graduating with an impressive 4.37 CGPA.

The graduate revealed that he completed secondary school in 2020 but did not sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) that year because he wanted to acquire a skill before proceeding to university. He subsequently started learning graphic design but stopped after struggling with access to a laptop. Undeterred, he later began learning frontend development using a mobile phone.

In 2022, he sat for JAMB for the second time after failing to meet the required cut-off mark in his earlier attempt. He eventually gained admission to LASU to study Computer Science. During his university years, he distinguished himself beyond academics, serving as a Lagos State Youth Ambassador, Faculty Coordinator for the LASU Debate Society, and a volunteer Frontend Engineer with the Digital Working Group of DevFest Lagos. He also won Best Debater at the LASU Debate Society 2025/2026 and mentored aspiring developers at the GDG LASU Bootcamp 2.0.

Graduate Shares Father’s Emotional Congratulatory Message

Following his graduation, the young man shared a private conversation with his father, who expressed pride and congratulated him despite being unable to attend the convocation physically.

His father wrote:

“Congratulations to you on your convocation day. As you celebrate today, may you continually have more reasons to celebrate IJN. Though, I’m not with you in body, GOD is with you in spirit. Have a fulfilled day, buddy.”

The message resonated with social media users, particularly because the graduate’s achievement came after an unconventional journey that included writing JAMB twice and learning technology with limited resources.

The graduate said his achievements went beyond obtaining a university degree, highlighting his involvement in technology, public speaking, leadership, debate, volunteering and mentorship.

His story has consequently attracted attention online as an example of how persistence, self-development and determination can help young Nigerians overcome setbacks on their path to academic and professional success.
