PDPThe Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Nigeria Police Force to remain neutral and avoid partisanship as preparations for the 2026 elections begin in the state.

In a statement issued in Osogbo on Tuesday, the PDP commended the Inspector-General of Police and the State Commissioner of Police for their professionalism but raised concerns over what it described as “a disturbing trend” of frequent arrests and detention of its members under questionable circumstances.

According to the party, there appears to be a growing pattern of collusion between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and some elements within the Police, as petitions filed by the APC against PDP members are often treated with urgency, while similar complaints from the PDP do not receive the same level of attention.

The party further alleged that in several cases, the Police seemed to act as complainants on behalf of APC petitioners rather than serving as neutral investigators. It added that instead of bringing both parties together, the Police often initiated legal action directly against detained PDP members.

The PDP also expressed concern over reports that some of these operations were being coordinated from the Force Headquarters in Abuja, with attempts at times to transfer arrested PDP operatives to the Federal Capital Territory.

The statement, signed by the State Chairman of the PDP, Hon. Sunday Bisi, revealed that more than four such incidents had been recorded in the past two weeks.

“We have full confidence in the neutrality and professionalism of the Inspector-General of Police and the State Commissioner of Police. What we itemized above may be mere isolated cases or actions of some junior officers. Whatever may be responsible, we task the Police authorities to put a stop to it,” the statement read.

The party urged the Police to stop shielding APC petitioners and to desist from assuming the role of complainants in political disputes. It emphasized that neutrality is essential for peace and fairness as the state moves closer to the 2026 polls.

“It is too early for Osun to be involved in controversy over rights issues and electoral activities. We believe the Police will correct the negative trend in the interest of fairness, equity, and peace,” Bisi added.
