Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has issued a stern warning to politicians plotting to manipulate election results ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that such attempts will not succeed. The governor made the statement during the October edition of Alex Otti Speaks to Abians held at the Government House in Umuahia, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparent governance and the protection of the people’s mandate.
Governor Otti’s comments were in response to remarks attributed to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who reportedly boasted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would take control of Abia State in 2027. Otti, who was elected on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), dismissed the statement as mere political rhetoric and warned that any attempt to subvert the will of the people would meet stiff resistance.
The governor stated unequivocally that no individual or political group has the power to manipulate Abia’s electoral process, as the people of the state are now more politically conscious and determined to defend their votes. “I have heard that some people around him say, oh, they must take over this state, they must write results. The only advice I have for them is that if they truly want to write results, they should write something else before that time. You know what it is? Their will,” Otti said, sending a clear message to those contemplating electoral fraud.
He added that only the will of God and the collective decision of Abians would determine who governs the state after the 2027 elections. “No amount of intimidation, blackmail, or manipulation will change the fact that power belongs to the people,” he stated, emphasizing that Abia has moved beyond the era of political impunity.

Political Tension Builds Ahead of 2027 Elections
Governor Otti’s remarks come amid growing political tension in the Southeast as various parties begin to position themselves ahead of the next election cycle. The statement credited to Benjamin Kalu — that the APC would “take over Abia State in 2027” — has stirred reactions among political stakeholders, especially within the Labour Party, which currently holds power in the state.
While Otti acknowledged Kalu as a “friend and younger brother,” he cautioned that political ambition should not be pursued at the expense of peace and unity in Abia. “I am not afraid of threats. He is entitled to contest the 2027 governorship election, but he must learn to play according to the rules,” Otti said. He maintained that democracy thrives only when leaders respect the rule of law and the people’s right to choose freely.
The governor reiterated that his administration’s legitimacy was built on the overwhelming support of Abians, who voted massively for change in 2023. “Our people know what they want, and they have tasted what good governance feels like. We have shown that leadership can be people-centered and transparent. Anyone thinking they can use the old tricks to manipulate the process in 2027 will be disappointed,” he declared.
Otti stressed that the era when results were written in hotel rooms and political offices was over. He vowed that the government would work closely with security agencies, electoral bodies, and civil society groups to ensure that future elections in the state reflect the true will of the people.
‘I Have Forgiven Kalu,’ Says Otti
Reacting further to Kalu’s recent comments, Governor Otti said he harbored no personal grudges and had forgiven the Deputy Speaker for what he described as “unwarranted criticisms” of his administration. He expressed disappointment that Kalu, whom he considers a friend, had chosen to make statements capable of creating unnecessary political tension.
Otti, however, stated that forgiveness does not mean weakness. “I have forgiven him for the things he said about me and my administration. We are all brothers, and Abia is too small for us to fight. But let it be clear that no one will intimidate us or derail the progress we are making,” he said.
The governor emphasized that his focus remains on delivering good governance to the people of Abia State rather than engaging in political squabbles. He urged political leaders to channel their energy into supporting development rather than sowing division. “Our priority is to build a new Abia — one that is economically vibrant, socially just, and politically stable. We cannot afford distractions,” Otti added.
Otti Reaffirms Loyalty to Labour Party
Responding to recent speculations that he might defect to the All Progressives Congress, Otti categorically dismissed the rumours, stating that he remains a committed and loyal member of the Labour Party. He explained that his political philosophy aligns with the values of the LP, which focuses on social justice, accountability, and people-oriented governance.
“There is no truth whatsoever in the reports suggesting that I am planning to join the APC. I am a proud member of the Labour Party, and I remain committed to its ideals,” Otti said. He assured supporters that his government would continue to uphold the principles that brought the Labour Party to power in Abia — transparency, service delivery, and inclusivity.
The governor also used the occasion to highlight some of his administration’s achievements since assuming office, including road rehabilitation projects, healthcare reforms, salary payments, and economic initiatives aimed at empowering small and medium-sized enterprises. He noted that the progress recorded so far was only possible because his government operates with sincerity and accountability.
Abians Urged to Defend Their Mandate
Governor Otti concluded his address by calling on Abians to remain vigilant and continue supporting his administration’s vision for a new and prosperous state. He urged citizens not to be deceived by political propaganda or empty promises from those seeking to return the state to the “dark days” of misrule.
“Our people must continue to stand firm and defend their mandate. We have started a journey to rebuild Abia, and by the grace of God, we will not turn back,” he affirmed.
The governor’s strong words have since sparked reactions across the political spectrum, with many describing them as a bold declaration of his determination to safeguard democracy in Abia State. As the countdown to the 2027 elections begins, Otti’s message serves as both a warning to would-be election manipulators and a rallying call to Abians to protect the integrity of their votes.
