Osun Police Debunk Alleged Herdsmen Attack On Osogbo–Iwo Road

The Osun State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that herdsmen attacked commuters along the Osogbo–Iwo road, describing the allegation as entirely false.
In a statement issued in Osogbo, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Ojelabi, explained that the viral report stemmed from a road accident that occurred last Tuesday, not from any criminal assault.
According to Ojelabi, the incident involved a Toyota Sienna and a bungle bus whose bumper was damaged during a collision. Believing their own vehicle was unaffected, the occupants of the bus continued their journey without stopping.
Angered by the bus driver’s failure to stop, the Sienna driver allegedly raised a false alarm, accusing the two men in the bus, brothers traveling from Benin to Osogbo, of being kidnappers and thieves.
The alarm quickly mobilized people along the route, sparking a violent confrontation.
The police statement clarified:
“On 18th November, 2025, at about 1230hrs, a Toyota Sienna vehicle hit the rear of a bungle bus with registration number EPE 449 YLY around the Gbongan axis. The collision damaged the Toyota Sienna’s bumper, but the occupants of the bus, believing nothing was wrong with their own vehicle, refused to stop. The aggrieved Sienna driver raised an alarm, accusing the two brothers in the bus of being kidnappers and thieves.
This false alarm triggered an angry mob that pursued and eventually blocked the bus. The mob attacked the two occupants and vandalized the vehicle while attempting to lynch them.
Fortunately, a good Samaritan and local hunter from Gaa Saidu Ikofin, Ola-Oluwa LGA, intervened and rescued the victims, conveying them and their damaged vehicle to the Iwo Divisional Police Headquarters.

The mob trailed them to the station, creating tension, prompting the Divisional Police Officer to call for reinforcement from Osogbo. Tactical teams were deployed to restore calm.”
Ojelabi confirmed that the two victims are safe and currently under protective custody.
He added that efforts are underway to identify and arrest individuals involved in the attempted jungle justice.
The Police Command condemned the spread of false alarms and unverified information capable of inciting panic and putting innocent lives at risk.
Members of the public were urged to verify information before taking action or sharing reports on social media.
