Lagos APC Denies Claims of Speaker Obasa’s Resignation Amid Assembly Crisis
Party Affirms Resolution Did Not Include Speaker’s Exit
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed speculation that Speaker Mudashiru Obasa agreed to resign as part of the peace settlement to resolve the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Reports had surfaced suggesting that following Mojisola Meranda’s resignation and Obasa’s reinstatement as Speaker, an agreement was reached for him to step down within 48 hours, making way for a new Speaker from Lagos West, as demanded by 34 aggrieved lawmakers.
However, in a statement on Tuesday, Lagos APC spokesman Seye Oladejo refuted these claims, clarifying that Obasa’s resignation was never part of the negotiation process.
“To the best of my knowledge, there was no time the arrangement for Obasa to resign came up in the terms of settlement of the crisis,” Oladejo stated.

Obasa to Withdraw Lawsuit Against Lawmakers
As part of the reconciliation efforts, Obasa has pledged to withdraw the lawsuit he filed against the Lagos State House of Assembly and 33 lawmakers who opposed him. The lawsuit, filed at the Ikeja Court, challenged his removal from office and sought to contest the leadership dispute.
Confirming this development, Oladejo stated: “I’m aware that any moment from now, Obasa will withdraw the lawsuit in the interest of renewed peace and progress of the House in particular and the party in general.”
The withdrawal of the case is seen as a significant step towards restoring harmony and stability within the House of Assembly, which had been divided over the Speaker’s leadership.
Closed-Door Reconciliation Meeting with Lawmakers
On Tuesday, Obasa held a closed-door reconciliation meeting with 39 lawmakers at the Assembly complex to ease tensions and rebuild support among his colleagues. The meeting was attended by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda, who had earlier resigned from her role.
The peace talks were brokered by the APC leadership and the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), led by Pa Tajudeen Olusi. Other key figures involved in the negotiation included APC Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Lagos State Attorney-General Lawal Pedro (SAN), and top party leaders.
House of Assembly Set to Resume Session
Following the reconciliation efforts, a reliable source disclosed that the Lagos State House of Assembly has been directed to resume session on Wednesday. This move indicates that the leadership crisis may be nearing resolution, allowing lawmakers to focus on legislative duties.
Despite the APC’s denial of an agreement for Obasa’s resignation, anti-Obasa lawmakers are reportedly pushing to formalize the negotiation process in writing, ensuring that the agreed terms are implemented.
As the Assembly prepares to reconvene, the focus will be on maintaining political stability and strengthening party unity to prevent further leadership conflicts in the state legislature.
