APC’s Strategy for Political Homogeneity in the Southwest
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to achieving political uniformity in the Southwest region of Nigeria. According to Ganduje, the APC is determined to reclaim control of Oyo and Osun States in the upcoming governorship elections, solidifying its dominance in the region.
Ganduje made these remarks while officially welcoming retired Colonel Gbenga Adegbola into the party during a brief ceremony at the APC national secretariat in Abuja. The event marked another step in the party’s broader strategy to consolidate power in the geopolitical zone.
The APC leader first revealed these plans in November 2024, shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the party victorious in the Ondo State governorship election. Speaking at the ceremony, Ganduje emphasized that the APC remains committed to its mission and is actively working to achieve its goals.

Retired Military Officers as a Political Asset
While addressing party members at the event, Ganduje highlighted the advantages of having retired military officers like Adegbola in the party, emphasizing their discipline and leadership qualities. He noted that such individuals bring stability and structure, which are essential for the party’s growth and internal cohesion.
“This is a happy moment and a historic one for Oyo State politics. I am happy that the retired Colonel understands the rules and regulations of the party,” Ganduje stated. “You are behaving as if you have been in the party for years. He first went to his unit, then the ward and local government to register before proceeding to the state level. This explains why the leaders of the state are here with him at the national secretariat.”
Expressing confidence in Adegbola’s potential, Ganduje assured him that he now has the full rights and privileges of an APC member, including the opportunity to contest in elections. “By this declaration, you have the privilege, opportunities, and the chance to contest for any position in the party. If you decide to contest an election, an enabling environment is guaranteed,” he assured.
APC’s Blueprint for the Southwest
Ganduje further elaborated on the APC’s political strategy for the Southwest, emphasizing the concept of “political homogeneity.” According to him, the party is determined to secure victories in Oyo and Osun States by 2027, ensuring that the entire geopolitical zone aligns with the APC.
“Our blueprint for the Southwest geopolitical zone for 2027 is tagged ‘political homogeneity,’” he revealed. “In other words, according to our blueprint, we will work hard, and with the help of Allah (SWT) and the people of the state, Oyo will be an APC state in 2027.”
He also expressed confidence in winning back Osun State, which is currently governed by the opposition. “The other state in the zone that is off the hook—Osun State—In Sha Allah, will also be an APC state. That is what we mean by political homogeneity.”
Ganduje welcomed Adegbola and his supporters to the party, emphasizing that their inclusion strengthens the APC’s base. He assured them of equal opportunities within the party, stating that new members will enjoy the same status as long-standing members.
Implications for the 2027 Elections
The APC’s plan to secure Oyo and Osun States signals a broader political strategy aimed at solidifying control over the Southwest. With key figures like Adegbola joining the party, the APC hopes to attract more supporters and enhance its electoral prospects.
As Nigeria prepares for future elections, the political landscape in the Southwest will be closely watched, especially with the APC’s determination to reclaim lost ground. Whether the party’s “political homogeneity” strategy will succeed remains to be seen, but it is clear that the APC is positioning itself for a fierce electoral contest in the coming years.
