Senate President Pledges Unity Among Niger Delta Lawmakers
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State by rallying senators from the Niger Delta region. Speaking in Abuja on Friday, Akpabio assured a delegation from the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum that he would work closely with other lawmakers to restore peace and stability in the state.
The crisis in Rivers State has intensified following a Supreme Court ruling that suspended the state’s financial allocation until a duly recognized House of Assembly is constituted under the leadership of Martin Amaewhule. This decision has fueled tensions, with the Rivers State House of Assembly giving Governor Siminalayi Fubara a 48-hour ultimatum to present the 2025 budget. The deadline expired on Wednesday, further escalating the political standoff. Additionally, the Assembly directed Governor Fubara to dismiss all commissioners and political appointees, demanding a fresh list of nominees for screening.

Akpabio Calls for Order Amid Rivers State Crisis
Akpabio emphasized that his administration in the Senate would not overlook the instability in Rivers State and other regions facing similar political challenges. He assured that senators from the Niger Delta would collectively work towards a peaceful resolution, ensuring that governance in Rivers State does not collapse due to political disputes.
The Senate President’s intervention comes at a time when political factions in the state are locked in a power struggle, raising concerns over governance and public service delivery. By mobilizing Niger Delta senators, Akpabio aims to mediate between the warring parties and prevent further disruptions.
His assurances were met with appreciation from the delegation, led by Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr., who highlighted the historical significance of Akpabio’s position. He noted that it had been 46 years since a senator from the Niger Delta last held the Senate Presidency, making Akpabio’s leadership a crucial opportunity for the region.
Senate President Responds to Critics
In a related development, Akpabio strongly criticized what he termed “armchair critics” who challenge the decisions of the Senate without proper understanding of parliamentary rules. His remarks followed the public backlash over the suspension of Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, for allegedly violating Senate procedures.
Akpabio expressed surprise at the criticism, urging Nigerians to seek accurate information before making judgments. He emphasized the need for the public to understand Senate rules before making accusations or misrepresenting decisions made by the legislative body.
“You should try to go and know the facts before you start running commentaries on television. We advise members of the public to desist from running commentaries on things they do not know, misquoting the rules of the Senate,” Akpabio said.
His comments underscore the growing tension between lawmakers and the public regarding legislative actions, particularly in cases where suspensions or disciplinary measures are enforced.
Niger Delta’s Influence in the Senate
During his address, Akpabio assured that his tenure as Senate President would prioritize the interests of the Niger Delta region. He acknowledged the concerns raised by Lokpobiri and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the region’s representation in the Senate is not taken lightly.
With political uncertainty looming in Rivers State, Akpabio’s intervention could be a critical step toward stabilizing the state’s governance. His leadership in mobilizing Niger Delta senators reflects an effort to unify political leaders and prevent further disruptions in the region.
As the crisis continues to unfold, all eyes will be on the Senate’s role in facilitating a peaceful resolution while maintaining legislative integrity.
