The Federal Government has commenced the implementation of key welfare provisions contained in its renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), marking a significant step toward addressing long-standing concerns within Nigeria’s public university system.

The agreement, signed on January 14, followed months of intensive negotiations between a government committee and ASUU leadership. It is aimed at resolving recurring industrial disputes and improving the working conditions of university lecturers nationwide. The renegotiation process, which concluded in 2025, focused largely on staff welfare, funding, and measures to stabilize academic activities in public institutions.

Announcing the development on Monday, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, confirmed that the government has approved a 40 percent increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for ASUU members. He noted that the new allowance structure takes effect from January 1, 2026, in line with the terms of the agreement.

Alausa described the move as part of the government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector and preventing future strikes that have repeatedly disrupted academic calendars. Stakeholders say the implementation of the agreement could restore stability to universities and improve morale among lecturers across the country.
