The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has underscored the importance of deeper collaboration with traditional rulers as part of efforts to strengthen national security and suppress smuggling activities in border communities.

The Acting Customs Area Controller of Ogun I Area Command, Mr. Oladapo Afeni, stated this during a strategic courtesy visit to the Onipokia of Ipokia Kingdom, Oba Yisa Olaniyan.

Mr. Afeni said traditional institutions remain critical partners in the fight against smuggling and in enhancing national security, particularly in border areas such as Ipokia.

He explained that closer synergy with community leaders aligns with the policy thrust of the Comptroller-General of Customs, which prioritises community engagement and strategic partnerships.

He reiterated the core mandates of the Nigeria Customs Service, including trade facilitation, revenue generation and anti-smuggling operations, and urged the traditional council to continue sensitising residents on the dangers of illicit trade and its adverse effects on national security and economic development.

In his response, the Onipokia of Ipokia Kingdom, Oba Olaniyan, commended the Comptroller-General of Customs for what he described as transformative leadership driven by global best practices.

The monarch encouraged the Acting Area Controller to carry out his responsibilities without fear or favour and reaffirmed that Ipokia is a peaceful and law-abiding community committed to supporting the Federal Government’s economic and security objectives.
