Don’t Kill Ex-Gov Bafarawa Warns TinubuOpposition:
Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, the former governor of Sokoto State, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu from dismantling opposition political parties.
According to news reports, former Governor Bafarawa stated that President Tinubu, who rose through the ranks of the opposition to become president, is unable to reverse his course and dismantle opposition parties.
Abdul Mahmud, the Public Interest Lawyers League President, posted this in an open letter on his 𝕏 account on Wednesday.
The president was reminded by the former leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that democracy is only guaranteed by the opposition.
“I feel obligated to remind you of how you became president, especially in the areas of economic development and security, as Nigerians wait for you to step up to the plate. Allowing the opposition to flourish paved the way for your rise to the nation’s top political post. Opposition politics were given an opportunity by those who were present before you. As a matter of fact, opposition politics produced you.
“Therefore, if you don’t give the opposition a chance to breathe and let yourself be swept away by the temporary power at your disposal, you will be making a serious mistake.”
“Mr. President, I implore you to let opposition politics exist. “Don’t discard the ladder you used to reach the summit,” he said.
The president was counseled by the former governor of Sokoto State not to pay attention to advisors who wanted him to silence opposition groups.
Nigeria cannot afford to be a one-party state, he emphasized. He asked him to respect and allow opposition parties to function freely.
“Anyone who suggests that you silence the opposition is trying to trick you into damaging your hard-won democratic reputation.
“Killing the opposition will be detrimental to the nation’s broader political development as well as your democratic record. Democracy perishes in a nation without opposition. Democracy is the foundation of good administration, peace, and prosperity; do not let it perish.
Therefore, I implore you, Mr. President, to resist the urge to establish a one-party system in Nigeria. Nigeria is unable to afford a one-party system. “It is a recipe for chaos,” he continued.
