Abakaliki — The Ebonyi State Government has approved the payment of a ₦150,000 Christmas bonus to civil servants across the state, as part of measures to cushion the effects of economic hardship and boost workers’ morale during the festive season.

Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru announced the bonus on Monday during a meeting with labour leaders and senior government officials at the Government House, Abakaliki. He said the decision was in line with his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers and appreciation of their dedication to public service.

According to the governor, the bonus will be paid to eligible civil servants before Christmas to enable them prepare adequately for the festivities.

“Our workers remain the backbone of governance in Ebonyi State. This ₦150,000 Christmas bonus is a token of appreciation for their resilience, commitment, and patience, especially in the face of prevailing economic challenges,” Nwifuru said.

He added that the state government has continued to prioritize prompt payment of salaries and pensions, stressing that workers’ welfare remains non-negotiable under his administration.

Labour unions in the state welcomed the announcement, describing it as timely and unprecedented. The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Ebonyi State commended the governor for what he termed a “people-oriented gesture,” urging other states to emulate the move.

Some civil servants who spoke with reporters expressed gratitude to the state government, noting that the bonus would significantly ease financial pressure during the Christmas period.

The Ebonyi State Government assured that modalities for immediate disbursement have been finalized, with payments expected to commence within days.
