Prominent Nigerian human rights lawyer Femi Falana has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to collaborate with other countries to apply diplomatic pressure on the United States over its role in the escalating conflict involving Iran and Israel.

Falana made the remarks during an appearance on Politics Today, a program aired on Channels Television on Thursday. The senior advocate criticized the actions of the U.S. leadership, accusing Washington of disregarding established international legal frameworks and global diplomatic protocols.

According to Falana, the administration of Donald Trump has shown little regard for international law and resolutions passed by the United Nations.

He argued that the Nigerian government should join forces with other countries to encourage respect for global laws and promote diplomatic solutions to the intensifying tensions in the Middle East.

Falana Calls for Multilateral Diplomacy

Falana emphasized that Nigeria should revive its historic role in international diplomacy by working with other nations to advocate restraint and dialogue.

Drawing from Nigeria’s diplomatic history during the era of the Non-Aligned Movement, he suggested that the country should once again pursue collaborative diplomacy rather than relying solely on unilateral global powers.

“Our duty as a country, as we used to do in the past, is to collaborate with other countries,” Falana stated during the television interview.

He stressed that Nigeria should urgently work with like-minded nations to mount diplomatic pressure on Washington in order to encourage adherence to international law and peaceful conflict resolution.

The senior advocate also highlighted the importance of engaging other major global powers such as Russia and China in diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating the crisis.

According to him, both countries maintain significant influence over Iran and could play a critical role in encouraging restraint.

“We need to persuade China and Russia to intervene because those are the two countries that Iran will listen to,” he said.

Falana Warns Nigeria on Internal Security and Economy

Beyond international diplomacy, Falana used the opportunity to warn Nigeria about the dangers of overreliance on foreign powers for internal stability.

He urged the country to strengthen its own security institutions, particularly the armed forces and the police, to ensure national security and sovereignty.

According to him, countries must build strong internal systems rather than depending on powerful nations to guarantee order within their borders.

“Nigeria must wake up,” Falana said, stressing that effective governance requires strong domestic institutions capable of maintaining law and order.

The human rights advocate also criticized Nigeria’s management of its oil refining infrastructure, pointing out that despite billions of dollars reportedly spent on maintenance, the country’s government-owned refineries remain largely inactive.

Falana questioned why the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited now relies heavily on output from the privately owned Dangote Refinery.

He noted that approximately $2.9 billion had reportedly been spent on the rehabilitation of Nigeria’s four state-owned refineries, yet little progress appears visible to the public.

The lawyer argued that better economic management and stronger institutions would position Nigeria to play a more influential role in global affairs while safeguarding its national interests.

As geopolitical tensions continue to rise in the Middle East, Falana’s remarks highlight growing calls for diplomatic engagement and renewed attention to Nigeria’s domestic governance and international policy strategy.
